Position Description, Highlights, and Activities:


The Composite Engineer position at ES3 offers a leading edge opportunity to guide the Research, Development, Test ,and Evaluation (RDT&E) of composites for aerospace and other applications. This position will lead ES3's efforts to understand the requirements of aerospace operators and the developing market for composite structures. This position will work closely with a team of engineers and technicians in the development, fabrication, and test of new composite structures made with an ElectroImpact SCRAM and an Anisoprint AM composite machines (located in Clearfield, UT). This position will also work closely with a team of engineers and mathematicians (located in San Diego, CA) along with US and international university professors to develop advanced computational methods and models capable of predicting composite structural component performance.

The primary responsibilities of this dynamic role involve:

  • Identify commercial and military end user needs and requirements.
  • Guide composite RDT&E efforts in ensure that the developing composites meet industry needs.
  • Guide composite designs, fabrication methods development, test plan development, and test execution.
  • Guide composite modeling methods development to ensure it meets evolving commercial and military requirements and expectations.
  • Support the publication of papers in composite advancement.
  • Assist in the writing of proposals for RDT&E and production of composite samples / composite components.

Candidate Skills & Capabilities Required:

  • Expert knowledge and experience in
    1. the design of composite structures
    2. the computational modeling and analysis of composite materials.
  • Experience in material testing (ASTM standards).
  • Experience in Digital Image Correlation (DIC).
  • Expert knowledge of fracture mechanics for quasi-brittle materials.
  • In-depth theoretical knowledge in Finite Element Analysis.

Education & Work Experience Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, or material science.
  • Composite-related thesis work preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in composite RDT&E.

Other Requirements:

  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen
  • As a condition of employment, candidates will be required to participate in a background investigation and be able to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance
  • This position requires minimum-to-moderate travel:
    1. 2-3 days of travel per month to Clearfield, Utah if not located in Clearfield Utah
    2. 2-3 days of travel per month to San Diego if not located in San Diego
    3. 2-3 days of travel every other month to customer facilities, subcontract facilities, conferences, or trade shows.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation.
  • Fluent secondary language for Asian and/or European markets a plus.
  • Positive disposition and ability to work with staff including customers, academia, and co-workers (engineers, technicians, and support staff)
  • Flexible and able to pivot when priorities change.
  • Strong and honest work ethic, high integrity, and motivated for excellence.
