SUMMARY

Coordinates and directs the work of trades and subcontractors to perform work within their areas of responsibility to meet project goals. Support production and other processes in a team-based manufacturing environment or repair environment. May facilitate self-directed work teams, provide training to team and peers, and interact with internal and external customers with respect to product planning, problem resolution and process improvement. Directly responsible for the efficient operation of the shipbuilding/repair processes including safety, quality, schedule, and cost. The Performance of the Area Manager 1 is primarily measured by the success of the construction cycle/availability and delivery of the ship; this is measured in terms of schedule and budget performance, as well as quality conformance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Contributes to the creation of New Construction/Repair policies and procedures with the Director/SOC\Ship Manager.
  • Understands and manages ship wide safety and housekeeping and ensures goals are being meet.
  • Participates in the logistic planning and execution for the assigned area.
  • Participates in quality and process improvement techniques; identify problem areas and initiate corrective action.
  • Coordinates material and equipment protection in the assigned area.
  • Coordinates the production/test schedule and ensures requirements and goals are being met in the assigned area.
  • Monitors trade activities and provides input to the SOC/Ship Manager, General Supervisor and Superintendent to initiate appropriate action.
  • Coordinates resolution of conflicting trade/subcontractor priorities.
  • Monitors schedule and budget deviations. Coordinates with SOC\Ship Manager and Superintendent to initiates corrective action.
  • Participates in the development of management zone work strategy, plans and sequencing with assistance from Planning, Support Departments and trade supervision. Provides consistent feedback and improvements for follow on hulls/availabilities.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment by anticipating schedule and budget deviations, and initiates corrective action.
  • Provides appropriate feedback (lessons learned, ECNs, IDRs, etc.) to Ship/SOC management, Superintendent, Planning, and Support Departments.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in accordance with NASSCO's Mission, Vision, Values and Principles.
  • Understands and administers NAVSEA Standard Items (Repair only)
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School graduate or equivalent with good knowledge of trade responsibilities, ship systems, and shipbuilding practices.
  • Two (2) years experience in a shipbuilding, repair or equivalent manufacturing environment is desired.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. Effective reports are a key deliverable of this individual's activities.
  • Good team-building skills.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of NASSCO's policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to climb vertical ladders and scaffolding, and work at heights. Must be physically able to commute to various areas of shipyard. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing.Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Works at heights. Position requires the ability to walk on scaffolding and work at heights aboard vessels under construction or repair.Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements.While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70%of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments. The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

PAY SCALE

$69,300 - $96,800

Salaried Roles

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
