The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position focusing on micro- and nano-scale processes, and imaging of these processes, during various aspects of natural and engineered carbon mineralization, in collaboration with a vibrant research group investigating:
(1) looping of MgCO3-MgO and CaCO3-CaO via calcining (heating) carbonate materials to produce CO2 for storage or use, plus reactive oxide material, followed by weathering of the oxides to remove CO2 from air.
(2) “cracking versus clogging” due to volume change during natural and engineered mineral carbonation with a focus on fluid-peridotite reaction aimed at designing engineered, in situ storage of CO2 in solid carbonate minerals.
(3) fluid transport during natural weathering of mantle peridotite, with applications to the subsurface biosphere, pre-biotic chemistry, astrobiology, and greenhouse gas mitigation.
The postdoc will be based at LDEO, but will also spend time working with our collaborator, Prof. Sally Benson at Stanford University.
Candidates should have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in Geosciences, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or related disciplines, and demonstrated competence in characterization of geological materials at the micron to nanometer scale.
Proposed start date is July 1, 2021, with some flexibility. Appointment will be for one year, with continuation dependent on funding and progress. This search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.
Columbia University benefits offer with this Officer of Research appointment.
