General Information

The Biology Department at James Madison University (JMU) is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research-Teaching position in the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Monroe at James Madison University beginning Fall 2021. This position is funded in part through a Research at Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant from the NSF. This position is offered for one year, with the option to extend one additional year.

The Biology Department at JMU is housed in a Bioscience building that opened Fall 2012. JMU is located in Harrisonburg, VA, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, one of the most diverse communities in the State of Virginia, and is about a two-hour drive from Washington, D.C. The area affords many opportunities for outdoor recreation, with the George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park located nearby. Duties and Responsibilities

The research involves investigating the structure, function, and evolution of a beta-amylase in Arabidopsis using analysis of gene expression, purified proteins, T-DNA insertion mutants, and starch structure and metabolism. In addition to gaining experience in mentoring undergraduate researchers, the postdoc will also undertake some classroom and laboratory teaching in introductory and upper-level courses fitting the background of the postdoc. Travel support is available to attend the national conferences of ASPB and the Council on Undergraduate Research.


Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in plant molecular biology and be seeking a career at a predominantly undergraduate institution. Experience with, or interest in polysaccharide chemistry, gene expression or protein structure and function is desirable.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
