The Kushnir Lab at Duke University seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to begin July 1, 2021. Research in the lab examines learning and conceptual change in young children with a focus on social learning and social cognition. Dr. Kushnir’s work is motivated by a long-standing curiosity about the developing mind, and in particular by how children learn about themselves and others from actively exploring the world around them. Research topics include: mechanisms of causal learning, the developmental origins of our beliefs in free will and agency, cultural influences on early social and moral beliefs, normative reasoning, and epistemic trust, and the role of imagination in social cognition, motivation and decision making.

This position will examine the role of identity and motivation in children’s learning about social norms across cultures and will be the lead researcher on several empirical investigations, in collaboration with our co-PIs at Cornell, Shanghai Normal University, and the ministry of Education in Singapore. The responsibilities include study design, supervising and leading data collection, coding, and analysis, and writing of manuscripts for publication.

Additionally, position will supporting general lab administration (running meetings, helping with recruitment, doing community outreach, etc). Strengths in open science practices, social media and science communication, and writing accountability/support required, as the candidate will lead efforts in those areas.

This position will provide the opportunity to interact with scientists across Duke, including a rich community of memory researchers and a large cognitive neuroscience community. This position has full benefits and salary will be determined based on current NIH scales. The initial appointment will be for one year, with renewal based on continuation of grant support and success in the position.
