Summary Description

The Department of History at Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in Slavery and the American University, beginning September 1, 2021. The initial term of appointment is September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022, with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on satisfactory performance. The scholar will support the work of the Columbia and Slavery project, an on-going effort to examine Columbia University’s connections to slavery and its aftermaths. We welcome applicants from a variety of academic backgrounds, including (but not limited to): African American history, the history of North American slavery and emancipation, the history of American higher education, the history of abolition, and New York City history. Experience in digital humanities and/or public humanities a plus.

Review of applications will begin March 15 and continue until the position is filled.

Minimum Degree Required

Ph.D.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by August 31, 2021, and have completed the Ph.D. no sooner than January 1, 2018.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in digital humanities and/or public humanities beneficial. Applicants are encouraged to highlight how their scholarship, service, and teaching would help further Columbia’s mission of building a culturally diverse, equitable, and inclusionary scholarly environment.
