Job Requisition Number 00002118
Field(s) of Specialization
Position Title Staff Associate III
Department Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics
Division Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics
Location
Summary Description

The Computational Cancer Biology Laboratory and the Laboratory for Synthetic Organogenesis at Columbia University are jointly seeking a Staff Associate III to assist with ongoing research in cancer biology in both labs as well as with collaborative projects between the two labs. In particular, the Staff Associate III would participate in projects that would involve the use of single-cell genomic technologies to study the heterogeneity in the tumor microenvironment and underlying mechanisms of response to immunotherapies in cancer patients. The experimental lab closely interacts with the computational component of the lab in an interdisciplinary environment with members from diverse backgrounds and skill sets. The Staff Associate III would also participate in projects focusing on applying bioengineering techniques to stem cell biology and developmental biology to understand the mechanisms underlying key milestones in embryonic development and disease. The lab uses human embryonic and patient-derived stem cells to mimic embryogenesis and organogenesis in vitro.
Most importantly, the two labs will be collaborating on studying the mechanism of timing in early embryogenesis leveraging single-cell technologies and computational methods and stem cell bioengineering techniques and CRISPR screens. The Staff Associate III would facilitate the collaborative efforts between the two labs and would also facilitate the transfer of tissue culture skills from one lab and single-cell techniques from the other lab which are important in the future research directions of the labs.
The primary responsibilities of the Staff Associate III include design of experiments, optimizing protocols, library preparation and single-cell profiling of samples, mentoring Postdoctoral Research Scientists and students, as well as general lab duties such as ordering reagents and equipment.

The labs are located in a shared space on the Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus which makes a joint recruit feasible. The labs are surrounded by a highly dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment, with direct access to state-of-the-art stem cell, microscopy, and sequencing facilities.

The candidate is expected to work with minimal supervision to design, execute and interpret experiments working in a collaborative research environment with both labs.
