The general salary range for this position is $25.50 – 30.00 per hour. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education. This position is a 2-year rotating appointment July 2024 - July 2026.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking two (2) Diverse Fellows for the Programs and Policy department. In this position you provide support to our program and policy initiatives for an assigned campaign to achieve organizational goals. The Fellow will assist with developing and implementing public policy projects and activities; research; coalition building; and provide general support to further the goals and objectives of the department. The fellow will assist in integrating our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programmatic work into assigned campaigns to ensure our programs and policies are culturally competent and inclusive of historically marginalized, under-resourced, and underserved communities to build a stronger, more inclusive animal protection movement.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates and/or assists in policy efforts including legislative bill and agency rule tracking, coalition building, garnering endorsement from elected officials and supporters, organizing volunteers, and phone banking and other grassroots support;
- Develops materials such as reports, action alerts, fact sheets, op-eds, talking points, letters to the editor, communications to legislators, testimony, lobby packets, and other advocacy and outreach materials;
- Monitors key sources for news relevant to the assigned program and provides in-depth research and analysis on relevant public policy issues;
- Lobbies elected officials and testifies before government committees to encourage them to pass legislation and ordinances that support animal welfare and oppose harmful legislation;
- Contributes to the overall goals of our diversity, equity, and inclusion programmatic work, including assisting with webinars, conference scholarships and receptions, DEI framework review, social media content management, and other projects;
- Assists with message development, talking points, and campaign strategy;
- Performs other duties or responsibilities as assigned.

- Bachelor’s degree in communications, science (wildlife, psychology, zoology, etc.), public policy, or another related field, or equivalent work experience required;
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in public policy, communications, research, advocacy, nonprofit operations, or another related field preferred;
- General understanding of the regulatory and legislative process;
- Must have a passion for social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion;
- Experience in creating content for earned and owned media;
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
- Strong research, written, and verbal communication skills;
- Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
- Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
- Willing and able to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends;
- Strong interpersonal skills are necessary;
- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
