DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education, and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Under direct supervision, the Lab Assistant will provide support to the UCSD Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. This includes maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, sample preparation, keeping the laboratory area clean and organized, and assisting with administration. The incumbent performs other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of biology and chemistry. Ability to work with genetics or biochemical genetics.

  • Experience working in a research lab environment and basic knowledge of biological terms. Willingness to follow step-wise experimental protocols. Skill and ability to keep accurate data.

  • Ability to use basic laboratory equipment including balances and pH meters.

  • General computer skills, to input data, store results and compute rawdata. Knowledge of Access, MS Word, and Excel.

  • Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, income, and expenditures reports.

  • Willingness to become familiar with proper handling of chemical and biohazardmaterials.

  • Willingness to maintain confidentiality.

  • Organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Willingness to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety andenvironmental issues. Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment. Willingness to work with other staff members, students, faculty etc.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,662 - $52,513 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.39 - $25.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
