Essential Functions


Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in the Dr. Brad Racette Laboratory (Neurology).

Laboratory Research Focus:  Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders

The Dr. Brad Racette Lab is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on “A Nationwide Geographic Cluster Analysis of Incident Parkinson’s Disease.” Our research laboratory focuses on the environmental epidemiology of Parkinson’s disease (PD), and other neurodegenerative diseases, such as motor neuron disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Our primary focus is the role of neurotoxicants in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The primary focus of this postdoctoral research associate will be to leverage existing analytical skills to develop expertise in administrative data research focusing on neurodegeneration. Specific projects, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, Cure Alzheimer’s Foundation, and The Michael J. Fox Foundation, investigate disease prediction (PD), pharmacoepidemiology (PD and Alzheimer’s disease), and disease risk factors (PD and Alzheimer’s diseases). Disease risk factor projects emphasize the role of neuroinflammation and environmental neurotoxicants in disease pathophysiology.  Our lab website is https://neuro.wustl.edu/labs/racette_b , and a list of Dr. Racette’s publications can be found at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/brad.racette.1/bibliography/public/ .

The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with multiple investigators in the Racette laboratory, including:  Dr. Brad Racette, Dr. Susan Searles Nielsen, Dr. Alejandra Camacho-Soto, Dr. Susan Criswell, and Dr. Osvaldo Laurido-Soto. They will also be encouraged to develop an independent research focus within the broad area of neurodegeneration epidemiology, consistent with the laboratory mission. In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Career Center, Teaching Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and campus groups.

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor, including (but not limited to):

  • Manages own projects under supervision of the PI’s, leading to first author publications.
  • Prepares and submits papers on research, including helping colleagues and collaborators submit their own first author papers.
  • Designs research studies and analytic plans with a thorough understanding of causal pathways and potential sources of bias.
  • Develops or expands expertise in large administrative data handling and analysis, including cutting-edge statistical methods, such as machine learning.
  • Develops or expands expertise in geographic information systems (GIS) software, geographic cluster detection software, and Bayesian modeling for geographical epidemiologic studies.
  • Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, and networking.
  • Presents scientific work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Develops proficiency in critical evaluation of scientific literature, and evaluates research findings within the context of this literature.
  • Discharges their research responsibilities in a conscientious manner.
  • Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of thoroughly documented statistical analysis code and output.
  • Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Maintains collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
  • Adheres to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations.  All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

  • Required Qualifications

    • Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent terminal or doctoral degree, prior to the agreed upon start date.
    • Experience with complex data management and data analysis.
    • Ability to conduct independent research.
    • Demonstrated strong writing skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Expertise in one of the following disciplines: biostatistics, epidemiology, or related discipline.

    Salary Range

    Base pay commensurate with experience.
