POSITION TITLE: Director, Student Engagement & Belonging

DEPARTMENT: Student Life/Student Services & Enrollment Management

PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President, Student Success

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Oversees department and area staff as assigned

POSITION STATUS: This is a full-time, non-unit position with benefits, some nights and weekends required.

SALARY: $87,473.89 - $96,554.81*

  • Hiring salary Grade 10, commensurate with education and experience.


STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Director, Student Engagement & Belonging provides strategic vision, leadership, and administrative direction to the college's initiatives related to student engagement and belonging from admission through completion. The Director ensures delivery of services and programs for students and their family members that foster student success. The Director works closely with the Student Services and Enrollment Management Leadership Team to help effectively lead the college's engagement goals. The Director works collaboratively across the college to meet the evolving needs of the Bristol community.


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership/Management:

  • Provide strategic vision, administrative direction, and direct supervision for Student Engagement & Belonging; oversee Student Engagement & Belonging activities at all Bristol locations (Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, and online/remote).
  • Foster collaborative relationships across the institution with key partners, including, but not limited to Academic Affairs, Civic Engagement, Advising & Success, Admissions, Wraparound Services (Accessibility & Disability Services, Basic Needs, Student Affinity Centers), Athletics & Recreation, and College Access to promote student success and enhance student experience.
  • Serve as the College expert on student engagement and support other departments across the institution in developing, implementing, and assessing student engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Advising & Success and the Associate Director of Admissions on the implementation of a comprehensive orientation and onboarding program for a diverse student body.
  • Responsible for promoting a positive and inclusive work environment for all Student Engagement & Belonging department personnel while fostering a commitment to service excellence.
  • Evaluate performance of staff to ensure departmental objectives, goals, and tasks are met. Sets expectations and goals for all direct reports.
  • Support direct reports by providing leadership, supervision, and professional development.
  • Implement technological resources that scale, amplify, and measure department program and service efforts, in partnership with Information Technology Services and Marketing & Communications.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to student clubs and organizations including advising student organizations, formulating procedures for student clubs, assisting students with interpretation of college policies, and developing student club leader training and club advisor training programs.
  • Oversee the administration of student elections, the formation of new clubs and activities, and recruit faculty/staff for advisory roles with student clubs.
  • Serve as the liaison to the statewide Community College Student Leadership Association (CCSLA).

Student and Community Programs & Student Leadership Development:

  • Develop and implement a strategic engagement and belonging plan that meets the needs of a diverse student body.
  • Plan, organize, execute, and assess the college's co-curricular events and programs
  • across all college locations and online.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop an annual calendar of events that meets students' diverse needs and interests.
  • Assist with planning and implementing institutional events, including recruitment and enrollment, community, and annual signature events.
  • Plan and implement the college's welcome and belonging programs.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of the monthly community-based Bristol Mobile Food Market with support from Wraparound Services.
  • Create and implement inclusive, accessible, and equitable training, events, and leadership opportunities and other Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) programming in collaboration with campus and community partners including, but not limited to, the Student Affinity Centers (Multicultural; Veterans'; Women, Gender & Sexuality).
  • Conceptualize, plan, implement, and evaluate new DEIB student programs and initiatives in accordance with the College's strategic plan, equity goals, and the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda.
  • Use Bristol's digital communication tools, to advance the college's social media outreach and brand to internal and external constituents; represent Student Life on Bristol App.
  • Using the Bristol brand guidelines, develop promotional and marketing materials for Student Engagement & Belonging.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate co-curricular engagement and student leadership learning outcomes.
  • Plan, facilitate, and assess the annual Bristol Leadership Academy.

Assessment, Reporting, Budget & Grant Management:

  • Assure alignment between departmental activities and the institutional mission and strategic plan.
  • Provide responsible fiscal oversight and resource management for assigned budgets. Prepare and monitor annual operational budgets for all departmental programs and activities, including allocation of the Student Activity Fee.
  • Explore grant opportunities to supplement institutional funding of Student Engagement & Belonging initiatives and programs. Collaborate with the Office of Grant Development (OGD) to prepare and submit funding applications. Serve as principal investigator (PI) for any Student Engagement & Belonging-secured grants.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for Student Engagement & Belonging.
  • Monitor, evaluate, analyze and enhance operational effectiveness and implement changes as required for continuous improvement. Develop measurable outcomes and benchmarks for improvement in service delivery.
  • Develop and implement a standard mechanism for collecting data related to student engagement to assess the effectiveness of the services provided as they relate to enrollment and retention.
  • Engage in meaningful data analysis, including disaggregation of student data to evaluate equitable outcomes for students. Provide timely reports and analysis to various internal stakeholders, including but not limited to the President's Leadership Team, Student Services and Enrollment Leadership Team, Academic Leadership Team, and Strategic Analytics and Institutional Research.
  • Work collaboratively with college leadership to recommend and implement tactics that ensure achievement of persistence and retention goals, including increases to Fall-to-Fall student retention rate.
  • Infuse and actualize an assessment strategy, in partnership with Strategic Analytics and Academic Affairs, to measure co-curricular student learning, effectiveness, and satisfaction to improve retention and persistence.
  • Develop an ongoing assessment plan to gain deeper understanding on satisfaction and learning outcomes; connect key data points to student information systems to identify how student engagement affects student persistence and graduation rates; provide ongoing data reports and analysis to key college leadership groups.

Administration:

  • Develop and implement a communication strategy to increase knowledge and awareness of Student Life offerings among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings.
  • Serve on various leadership councils for Student Services and Enrollment Management; lead and serve on various college committees, as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions and work collaboratively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

Job Requirements:


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

  • Minimum of a Master's degree in higher education or related field.
  • Progressive leadership, administrative, and supervisory experience with a minimum of three years of experience in a student affairs, student services, or enrollment management area within higher education.
  • Thorough knowledge of student development, event planning, and budget management.
  • Successful history of collaboration with others across divisions to build effective relationships.
  • Prior budget management experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for all students through upholding the community college mission and serving the needs of first-generation and historically excluded populations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implementing DEIB programming that reflect inclusiveness, adaptiveness, and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with student information systems, event scheduling software, and Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to embracing and serving the needs of a diverse community, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior supervisory experience in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Prior experience working at a multi-campus community college.
  • Experience working with one or more of the following software packages: Ellucian Banner, Engage, Blackboard, Argos, Slate, Maxient, and EAB/Navigate.
  • Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.
