Essential Job Duties

The Science Communicator will support a wide range of internal and external communication activities. This position creates and edits content in collaboration with the communication team serving North Carolina Sea Grant, North Carolina Space Grant, and the Water Resources Research Institute. Primary responsibilities will include helping to develop web and print communications, assisting with reporting to meet federal requirements, and/or supporting other administrative tasks and activities.

Work Schedule

Flexible hybrid schedule with approximately 40% remote time and 60% in-office time, all within normal business hours (8AM-5PM, Monday-Friday).

Other Work/Responsibilities

Locating images to accompany articles; researching background on policy, events, and people; conducting interviews by email, Zoom, and phone; posting online news releases and stories, adding images and hyperlinks; updating web content; formatting print products for online publication; assisting with additional products, Powerpoint presentations, other preparations for meetings, including compiling materials for events; and/or other miscellaneous requests and administrative tasks. 

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree with professional experience on a communication team and/or in related professional settings; experience with the content/topic areas of North Carolina Sea Grant, NC Water Resources Research Institute, and/or North Carolina Space Grant.

Department Required Skills

Translating science and creating content for lay audiences; text proofing and editing; using content management systems; familiarity with MS Office and Adobe.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

0.5 years experience as part of a science communication team; Masters degree in communication (or in a related field) or in a field related to the content areas for NC Sea Grant, NC Space Grant, and/or NC Water Resources Research Institute; experience with internal organization/agency reporting; video editing/production skills; creative design and layout skills; experience running social media feeds for institutions or groups.
