Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Scientific Computation (AMSC) program is an interdisciplinary graduate program that awards MS and PhD degrees in three concentrations within the Mathematics Department.

The Graduate Assistant for the AMSC Graduate Program will:
  • Support the AMSC Coordinator, the AMSC Director, and the success of our program by providing outstanding customer service to AMSC students, faculty, and prospective students as well as other stakeholders in the Math Department
  • Represent AMSC in a professional and knowledgeable manner at events as well as by phone/email/in-person contact
  • Assist with recruitment, events, and marketing initiatives through in-person support and preparation/design of digital and print materials (e.g., graphics, flyers, and posters)
  • Assist with our program’s admissions process, e.g., data entry and prep for Open House
  • Draft communications about the AMSC Graduate Committee meetings and Qualifying Exams
  • Update reports, presentations, documents, and webpages, etc.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as creating documents, printing, filing, etc.
  • Lead the New Student Mentor Program with mentor/mentee matching and planning ~2 events per semester to support student networking
  • Assist in the creation of quarterly newsletters and other communications through Google layouts and Mailchimp
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

During events, hands-on help such as setup and cleanup is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Must be accepted into a Master’s or Doctoral program at UMD, and able to work the required 20 hours per week in the AMSC Office.
  • Candidate must maintain full-time enrollment status in a graduate program at UMD while employed as an FTE .50 Graduate Assistant (for more info: https://academiccatalog.umd.edu/graduate/policies/policies-graduate-assistantships/).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Google Drive applications, Adobe Acrobat DC, Zoom, Box, and be adept at learning new tech skills/tools.
  • Ability to handle confidential data with discretion and tact.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service to AMSC faculty, students, staff, and prospective students.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects and assignments with various deadlines simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail, good judgment, and strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Graphic Design skills using Canva (or other basic graphic design/content creation tool such as Adobe Express).
  • Experience with Mailchimp, Google layouts, or other similar bulk email/template tools.
  • Website Editing/development skills using Joomla or similar CMS; and/or basic skills in HTML/CSS (not required, but helpful).

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Experience with event planning (e.g., room reservation, ordering food, advertising, etc.).
  • Experience in customer service, especially in a university setting.
  • Experience in working in an office setting.

Additional Information:

  • Benefits of this appointment include 10 credits of tuition remission during the Fall and Spring semesters (Note that UMEI courses and consortium courses are not covered under tuition remission) and participation in the MD State employee health benefits program. All Graduate Assistants on a full-time or half-time appointment are billed at the in-state rate for credits taken during their appointment, including any credits taken over the tuition remission allowance.
  • Most hours will be performed during normal working hours (8:30 AM – 5 PM, Mon-Fri), with very few hours after 5 PM on rare occasions for events.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in a traditional office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards with substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The position requires viewing a computer terminal, reading, and/or analyzing/preparing information. The position sometimes requires the incumbent to maneuver short distances for events and meetings on campus. The incumbent may be required to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
