Position Summary

The Dean of Instruction is responsible for the overall delivery of instructional services. The Dean of Instruction provides leadership, management and supervision in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the College’s instructional department’s initiatives. The Dean of Instruction is a key collaborator in the College’s strategic planning efforts. The Dean of Instruction serves as the College’s chief instructional officer and reports directly to the President.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to ACCS Board of Trustees Salary Schedule B.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the essential functions of the Dean of Instruction are to:


  • Maintain current educational programs and develop new instructional programs in coordination with RSTC faculty and instructional and administrative staff, in both general education transfer areas and in technical workforce development areas that are of the highest level of excellence.
  • Lead the strategic planning evaluation and improvement process for the Instructional Unit.
  • Maintain curriculum, program, and faculty credentialing standards and all agency and accreditation approval requirements to ensure integrity and excellence in all educational and instructional formats including traditional on-campus instruction, distance learning programs, dual enrollment programs, and all education partnerships.
  • Serve as the College’s chief instructional officer.
  • Supervise faculty and instructional staff and advise the President in the selection of qualify faculty, division chairpersons, and instructional support staff.
  • Chair the Professional Development and Academic Committee and other college committees as assigned by the President and/or designee.
  • Design, direct, and evaluate mentoring/orientation programs for all new full-time and adjunct employees in the instructional programs to ensure they are properly oriented, guided, and supported in performing their duties.
  • Conduct regular faculty meetings.
  • Develop collaborative plans with Student Services that increase fall to fall retention rates and percentage of students that graduate.
  • Develop the College instructional calendar, College catalog, and prepares and publishes a projected two-year course schedule.
  • Ensures that instructional programs, delivery platforms, and learning opportunities are relevant, effective and efficient, and promote student learning.
  • Monitors and analyzes student retention, progression, completion and gainful employment data to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Monitors and analyzes student and program outcome data to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Manages scheduling to ensure that College faculty are assigned appropriate workloads and maintain a high quality of work.
  • Collaborates with the Workforce Development and Adult Education divisions to establish effective relationships with area business and industry for development and implementation of credit and non-credit training, certificates and licensure opportunities that meet the regional workforce demand.
  • Collaborates with the Division of Student Services and the enrollment management process to effectively promote student success and increase student program completion.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and guidelines of all institutional and instructional governing bodies and accrediting agencies.
  • Provides leadership in maintaining SACSCOC accreditation, program accreditation, and certification standards for instructional services.
  • Monitors instructional programs to ensure progress towards assessment of student of learning outcomes.
  • Reviews student evaluations of faculty and monitors faculty professional growth plans and progress towards self-improvement.
  • Provides leadership and supervision for an integrated program of library and media services that is supportive of the total College program in cooperation with Library Services.

Qualifications

 

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of administrative experience in instructional program planning, implementation, evaluation and/or continuous quality improvement.
  • Two (2) years of experience working directly with Regional Accrediting Agencies engaged in institutional compliance and review.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students to develop a positive and productive environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Up to 10 days a year of professional development leave with pay may be granted by the President.

Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.
Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 12.59% (effective 10/01/22)

Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
