The Center on Policy Initiatives (CPI) is an innovative San Diego non-profit organization that combines cutting-edge research, policy campaigns, coalition building and leadership development programs to promote social and economic justice for working people and diverse communities. CPI seeks an organizer to lead economic justice and equity coalitions throughout the San Diego region. This is a full time position requiring an individual of independence, initiative and responsibility. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to strengthening the labor and progressive social justice movements; collaborating with diverse community and worker organizations; and conducting effective organizing, outreach and the promotion of a comprehensive policy program. The right candidate will be able both to manage coalitions and support emerging grassroots leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Organizer is responsible for:

  • Leading campaign efforts, including developing collective goals, coordinating campaign strategies, executing organizing tactics, and connecting organizing work with research and public policy.
  • Developing and maintaining strong coalitions among diverse groups of organizational stakeholders and neighborhood leaders.
  • Leading efforts for community outreach, recruitment, education and grassroots political action for CPI campaigns.
  • Training and supporting individual leadership in the strategy and execution of issues and campaigns.
  • Working with elected leaders and their staff to advance policy goals.
  • Coordinating the content and logistics for actions and events.
  • Mobilizing people to actions and events.
  • Phonebanking, canvassing, and conducting site visits in support of CPI’s goals, campaigns, and programs.
  • Educating the community about CPI issues and campaigns.
  • Tracking progress toward organizing and campaign goals.
  • Documenting CPI’s organizing and campaign accomplishments and communicating with appropriate stakeholders about progress in reaching goals.
  • Supporting the work of the organization as a whole.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Experience in community, labor, or faith-based organizing or campaigns.
  • Experience working with communities of color, immigrant communities, and/or people whose first or only language is other than English.
  • Experience leading and training community volunteers to engage in door-to-door canvassing, phone outreach and public speaking.
  • Experience communicating with a wide array of audiences: grassroots, community, professional and elected officials.
  • Able to manage multiple campaigns on different timelines and with different objectives.
  • Experience working with and helping to develop diverse, broad-based coalitions.
  • Strong facilitation skills for meetings and trainings.
  • Ability both to lead and to work well in teams.
  • Strong campaign planning, time-management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-directed and able to handle multiple projects and responsibilities
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to learn the organization’s technology tools.
  • Availability and willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven lead-level coalition organizing experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with recruiting and training new leaders.
  • Experience working with elected officials.
  • Strong attention to detail and well-organized.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Experience leading multiple components of a campaign from beginning to end.
  • Experience working with 1) education issues, 2) infrastructure and planning issues, and/or 3) workers’ rights issues.
  • San Diego ties or a history of participation in regional organizing networks
  • Bilingual Spanish/English.

Compensation: CPI’s salary and benefit standards are competitive and reflect our commitment to economic justice and equal pay for equal work. The salary range for this position is between $53,000 and $59,625 per year. We offer a full benefits package including employer-paid health, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, and a generous paid time-off program including paid sick, vacation, and holidays.
