The Office of Research Commercialization (ORC) plays a crucial role in this by protecting and promoting University research discoveries and intellectual property, working with and guiding industry partners, and promoting the acceleration of startups. We’re driving economic growth by facilitating the commercialization of research discoveries. 
 
We provide innovators with a wide range of programs and services to protect, market, and license intellectual property developed at NC State. Collaboration with NC State innovators and industry partners has led to the creation of more than 100 startups and 500 commercialized products that benefit society on a local, national, and global scale. 
 
We work with industry partners to assess research for potential commercial success, seek partners who can benefit from new technology, and develop critical relationships that make the technology commercialization process work. 
 
We provide university entrepreneurs with assistance and resources to launch startups and scale businesses based on university innovations.

Essential Job Duties

Responsible for the development and maintenance of licensing, research, and business relationships between the University and its commercial partners. Serve the research and education community of NC State and act as a liaison between NC State and other agencies. Review new invention disclosures, develop commercialization strategies, evaluate the need for and develop IP protection 
strategies, and negotiate contracts with industry including license agreements. May be able to work from home (within normal commuting distance from Raleigh) several days per week with supervisor approval.

Minimum Education and Experience

PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or related and 2 years of experience as a Licensing Associate, Licensing Manager, Technology Transfer Associate, or any other position in which the required experience was gained. Must have demonstrated experience with: assessing new inventions, conducting IP assessment, including prior art and patent landscape analysis, as well as an interdisciplinary understanding of IP law and technology commercialization of early-stage research discoveries and inventions; supporting an innovative ecosystem within a university, as demonstrated by cross-industry collaboration, coordination with stakeholders to facilitate research, and providing educational presentations to university inventors regarding commercialization of 
early-stage discoveries and inventions, IP strategies and university IP 
management; evaluating patentability, utilizing patent databases,  developing IP strategies and seeking IP protection, including patents and copyrights, to enable licensing of university inventions and associated IP assets to third parties; negotiating and drafting agreements, including confidential agreements, material transfer agreements, inter-institutional agreements, term-sheets, option 
agreements and license agreements; and developing technology-specific marketing campaigns and non-confidential summaries, identifying potential licensees and development partners, and establish industry partnerships to support university research and collaborative activities.
