The Montana State University College of Nursing has been continuously approved by the MT Board of Nursing since its inception in 1937 and nationally accredited since 1949.

The Montana State University College of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and an accelerated BSN degree option for applicants who already have a bachelor’s degree in another discipline. At the graduate level we offer a Master of Nursing degree, as well as a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. The undergraduate curriculum is offered in five locations across the state (Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Missoula, and Kalispell) to better serve the needs of our students and the state. The MN and DNP programs are largely distance delivered and offer curriculum options including: Clinical Nurse Leader (MN), Family/Individual Nurse Practitioner (DNP), and Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (DNP). A Certificate in Nursing Education is also offered. The College of Nursing offers a research supportive environment in which tenure track faculty focus on projects of relevance to health care in rural and isolated areas. The College has been nationally recognized for its work in rural nursing practice, research that focuses on the needs of vulnerable populations especially American Indians, and the preparation of health care providers to serve rural areas. The Caring for Our Own Program (CO-OP), a project to recruit and retain American Indian students in nursing, is a national model for such work.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist Dean with strategic fiscal planning for College including planning for enrollment increases and for faculty-initiated, externally-driven or grant-required curricular and program initiatives. Has official signature authority for all aspects of fiscal and administrative management of the College.
  • Supervise the development, submission, and monitoring of FY budgets. Oversight of $10.0 million budget.
  • Oversee expenditures of all non-OSP college budgets including Foundation funds and faculty Development Accounts.
  • Oversee Scholarship Funds and work with Scholarship Committee on their awarding in collaboration with Academic Programs office.
  • Execute faculty Letters of Hire (approximately 2-3/year) and Letters of Appointment (approximately 150/year) in collaboration with Campus Directors and the Dean. Review and make recommendations from NTT Applicant Pool to Campus Directors and coordinate with Human Resources for hiring.
  • Ensure CON, MSU and MUS personnel policies are met and serve as a resource to CON Campus Directors regarding recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with HR Business Partner on payroll and personnel procedures including contract administration and salary raises.
  • Manage, analyze and report on teaching assignments and workload distribution College-wide across in-person and online courses for AY and summer semesters. Forecast staffing needs and costs based on enrollment projections.
  • Collaborate with College leadership to work within budgetary constraints to meet student demand and program requirements.
  • Serve as hiring authority for all classified staff, responsible for assessing overall College needs, writing appropriate position descriptions, coordinating recruitment efforts and serving as a major resource person for training.
  • Co-supervise, in collaboration with Campus Directors, all administrative staff at each of the College of Nursing campus locations (approximately 9-10 staff) including contributing to the annual performance review.
  • Co-supervise, in collaboration with Dean or Associate Dean(s), central administrative staff including research office and embedded IT Lead (approximately 2-3 staff) including contributing to the annual performance review.
  • Hire and supervise student employees for central administrative office (1-3 staff).
  • Plan and lead regular monthly staff meetings and extended staff meetings scheduled in conjunction with College-wide faculty meetings (August, December and May) for approximately 20 staff College-wide.
  • Serve as liaison between Dean’s Leadership Team and College-wide staff. Mediate conflicts among staff or between staff and faculty.
  • Supervise collection and reporting of data regarding faculty performance, employment, degree, licensure, and Board of Nursing requirements.
  • Develop and implement appropriate procedures and guidelines to ensure efficient, effective and standardized delivery of support services College-wide.
  • Serve as liaison between CON administrative staff and MSU shared services units to ensure timely and adequate communication and CON staff training related to MSU procedures.
  • Serve as a resource to the Dean, Associate Dean/s, Campus Directors, faculty and staff on administrative support issues, HR, personnel, and related activities.
  • Supervise embedded IT lead ensuring coordination with MSU IT shared services and other MUS IT entities (i.e., UM, GFC, and MSU-B).
  • Assess technology utilization and functioning regularly to assist with College-wide planning, capital investment, personnel assignment, and faculty and staff training needs.
  • Complete Faculty component of annual Board of Nursing Report. Contribute to CCNE and other national accreditation reports.
  • Complete additional data collection and analysis projects ad hoc.
  • Serve on Dean’s leadership team.
  • Serve as ex-officio member of the College’s Executive Council.
  • Serve as the College’s representative to University committees in the absence of the Dean and Associate Dean(s).
  • Plan for capital equipment acquisition College-wide for IT needs including faculty computing, classroom AV equipment, student computer labs, and tablets for integrated testing.
  • Plan for capital equipment acquisition College-wide for classroom and office furniture, simulation labs including manikins, specialized furniture, cameras, computers, and software.
  • Supervise inventory of equipment College-wide annually.
  • Facilitate MSU new employee orientations for new Faculty and Staff.
  • Evaluate and improve data collection and storage to ensure record retention practices consistent with state, federal and accreditation guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Campus Directors at non-Bozeman locations to ensure physical buildings are safe and adequate for program needs. Oversee that leases College-wide are accurate and current.
  • Responsible for MSU Safety and Risk Management reporting and monitoring including faculty drug screening.
  • Assist with handling student waivers, complaints related to student accounts, fees, or scholarships.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree in Finance, Administration, Education or related degree.
  • A record of progressively responsible work experience as a program, operations, or business manager for a large, complex organization.
  • Successful experience supervising staff.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting, managing, and reporting data.
  • Demonstrated experience making recommendations based on data and strategic needs.
  • Successful experience working in teams.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Advanced degree in Finance, Administration, Education or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working at a higher education institution.
  • Experience with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience working with an enterprise information system.
  • Demonstrated experience managing IT support functions.
  • Experience with health or similar professional education curricula.
