Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide brief solution based counseling and professional therapeutic services to current Laredo College and Title V LEAD Grant students that involves the application of mental health, psychotherapeutic, and human development principles to facilitate adjustment and personal development. 
 
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide introductory services to students in the LEAD Pathways Summer Bridge.
  2. Provide sessions for LEAD students on time management, stress reduction, emotional well-being, including strategies and apps to address critical situations and connect student to Laredo College services.
  3. Assist LEAD program staff and students with expert knowledge and structured mental health and wellness improvement programs.
  4. Attend LEAD program meetings and trainings as required.
  5. Provide time and effort monthly reports to LEAD Activity Director Provide individual and group psychotherapy to students.
  6. Provide emergency crisis intervention services. 
  7. Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation of all services contacts as required by center policies and procedures.
  8. Receives and responds to referrals from student, faculty, staff and others. 
  9. Conducts risk assessment and interventions for students in emotional or behavioral crisis and makes appropriate referrals as needed.
  10. Consults with, coordinates with, collaborates with and refers students to other health professionals and resources on and off campus.
  11. Attend and participate in case-staffing meetings.
  12. Adhere to ethical and legal requirements of appropriate licensing board.
  13. Provide and support outreach and prevention activities including but not limited to suicide prevention and campus crisis response. 
  14. Maintain and update professional knowledge and proficiency through continuing education, staff meetings, workshops, and serving on special committees. 
  15. Develop treatment plans, in accordance with established standards, consistent with assessment, in conjunction with students to include goals, intervention, necessary support, or referral service.
  16. Attend and participate in departmental and division meetings and staff development programs as assigned.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling and Disability Services and LEAD Activity Director.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, counselor education, social work, marriage and family, or other closely related field. 
  • Minimum 1 year of full-time or 2 years of part-time work experience.  
  • Must have one of the following licenses: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). License must be active and renewed for continued employment.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of counseling resources and best practices
  • Knowledge of human behavior, individual differences in abilities, personality and interests; learning and motivation
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, ethical standards, and college code of conduct 
  • Knowledge of local social services agencies and referral/resource information
  • Crisis management and clinical assessment skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish rapport, trust and non-judgemental theoretical approach to counseling individuals
  • Ability to apply professional and ethical principles and practices and exhibit good judgement and decision making skills
  • Ability to build positive collegial relationships and work with a diverse student population 
  • Ability to create and conduct presentations
  • Ability to utilize the web-based tools such as Maxient, PASPort, Banner, Canvas, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Teams and other departmental/college-wide software
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work-load, office setting/environment, schedule, and new assignments intended to support the needs of students and department/division/college goals
  • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish

Supervision Received
The LEAD Center Counselor will report directly to the Director of Counseling and Disability Services; however, the LEAD Center Counselor may receive direction and provisional supervision from the LEAD Activity Director as it relates to LEAD program activities or in the absence of the Director of Counseling and Disability Services.
 
Physical Requirements  
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment 
Work is performed in a standard office environment.    
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
