DESCRIPTION

The Department of Surgery is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine and is comprised of 102 full time faculty members, 220 voluntary faculty members, 20 physicians employed on MSP agreements, 25 doctors employed by the VA or other facilities, 77 accredited and 13 non-accredited trainees and 100 career staff. Activities are organized in 13 sub-specialty divisions. Annual expenditures across the Department total over $66.5M with a global research portfolio of over $19M. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The UCSDH Surgery Performance Mind Coach will provide comprehensive mental performance consultation services to optimize mindset, performance, and professional involvement of the Dept. of SURGERY's Residencies & Fellowships, a.k.a. Graduate Medical Education Trainees. This position will encompass a caseload model of training programs, offering one-on-one sessions for Trainees, mental training programs as Teams, and consultation for Program Directors & Assistant Program Directors. The focus of sessions includes mental performance optimization and support for professional well-being, such as confidence, resilience, attentional focus, emotion regulation, motivation, profession enjoyment, department/program culture, and leadership. This position does not provide mental health counseling or clinical diagnosis and is charged with immediately notifying the Program Director(s) & "Wellness" Assistant Program Director(s) of the potential mental health concerns and referring the Trainee to the UCSD HEAR Program - Healer Education Assessment and appropriate clinicians.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four (4) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area.

  • Basic knowledge of the health promotion and education field.

  • Skills associated with the delivery of health promotion and education programs.

  • Effective interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group. Excellent ability to communicate effectively with different diverse groups and personnel.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Basic knowledge of ACGME and UC San Diego rules and regulations.

  • Knowledgeable about performance psychology theories and frameworks and their application to practice.

  • Strong knowledge of consulting and counseling skills.

  • Understanding about the mental factors most associated with different types of elite performers and professions.

  • Committed to providing culturally appropriate and responsive services to clients with historically marginalized and oppressed identities related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, ability, and socioeconomic status.

  • Demonstrates a sophisticated multicultural understanding (e.g. race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, national origin) of self in the context of others (e.g., biases, EQ).

  • Committed to continued personal and professional development.

  • Knowledgeable about assessment methods for program &/or team selection.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with the objective measurement of physical activity & sedentary behavior; including ActivPALS, pedometers, accelerometers, and other wearable sensors.

  • Experience working with REDCap databases.

  • Experience working with an older population.

  • Doctoral or Master's Degree in Sport Psychology or related field (e.g., related to mental performance). Post-graduate experience working full-time as a mental performance consultant.

  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) (or has completed all coursework and mentored experience requirements). Five 5+ years of experience in Sport and Performance Psychology. Previous experience at a Division I Power 5 Conference and Healthcare institutions.

  • Experience providing brief and long-term individual mental performance consultation with athletes. Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive mental training programs for programs and teams. Experience providing mental performance services to diverse populations.

  • Proven track record in maintaining effective relationships with athletes, coaches, and support staff, and Program Directors.

  • Multiple years' post-graduate experience working as a mental performance consultant with elite athletes (e.g., collegiate, semi-professional, or professional).

  • Experienced and skilled in consulting and collaborating with mental health professionals, athletic trainers, physicians, dietitians, coaches, strength and conditioning professionals, and other athletics staff.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ethical issues in mental performance consultation, and adhere to the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) code of ethics.

  • Skilled in needs assessment and establishment of agreed outcomes with clients.

  • Position requires exceptional political sensitivity, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively across and outside the organization at all levels in a collaborative manner.

  • Documented history of professional excellence (e.g., conference presentations, peer-reviewed journal publications, and professional award recognition).

  • Experience working with Graduate Medical Education Trainees. Experience providing mental performance services with Graduate Medical Education Trainees and Program.

  • Directors & Assistant Program Directors across different types of Healthcare related professions.

  • Experience providing executive coaching or coach-the-coach services.

  • Knowledgeable about mental health and developmental issues of Healthcare Professionals at highly competitive health systems.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
