Summary of Position

The Deputy Chief of Police is the 2nd position on Command within the Plymouth State University Police Department and reports to the Chief of Police. The position performs highly responsible leadership and work activities in the planning, managing and directing the work of UPD employees. Will act as the Chief of Police during his/her absence or disability.

  1. Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, or equivalent combination of training, education and experience that would demonstrate equivalent knowledge.
  2. Ten years as a full-time certified police officer with a CityfTown/County or other law enforcement agency including three years at the rank of sergeant or higher.
  3. Advanced knowledge of law enforcement, Public Safety Services, Emergency Communication Services, technology and methodology.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of PSU Police Department rules and regulations; practices and standards, NH motor vehicle, criminal, arrest,. NH and Federal law, court decisions, the CLERY Act, TIiie IX, Campus Save Act, FERPA, HIPPA, accepted police procedure, accepted principles of supervIsIon and management, campus and host town geography, strong knowledge of community members..
  5. Demonstrated skill in the use and care of law enforcement and job-related equipment.
  6. Demonstrate leadership, supervisory and organizational ability.
  7. Demonstrated ability to react responsively in emergency situations.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  9. Excellent progressive past service record with a Police organization.
  10. Must successfully complete a physical examination and fitness agility test based on the entrance standards as determined by New Hampshire Police Standards and Training to determine sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  11. No criminal record other than minor motor vehicle violations.
  12. Must possess a New Hampshire Driver’s License.
  13. Must be certified as a full time police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council.
  14. Resourcefulness, tact and skill in dealing with general public and distressed individuals.

Duty/Responsibility

  • As an administrator, will manage, direct, discipline and train employees assigned to the PSU University Police Department in carrying out the policies, rules and regulations of the Police Department, PSU and the University System of New Hampshire, Federal, State and local laws and ordinances.
  • Performs all duties of patrol as required.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Has the responsibility of all essential functions of a Police Officer and supervisor.
  • Responds to all major crime scenes or emergencies.
  • Deputy Commanding office of the department, responsible for ensuring impartial enforcement of all criminal laws/policies/rules and regulations, and university policy.
  • Be responsible for the appearance, discipline, and efficiency of assigned employees, recommend policy and procedural changes, requisition and inventory supplies and equipment, supervisor care and control department equipment and supplies, request equipment repairs and issue equipment, investigate citizens’ complaints, conduct internal investigations and recommend discipline, identify problems and course of action, establish priorities, prepare performance evaluations on assigned employees.

  • Applies for and administers numerous state and federal grants, and seeks alternative funding sources.
  • Supervise and direct recruitment, training and selection of all department personnel.
  • Interview and recommend employment of full time and hourly staff.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Schedule shifts and makes shift assignments, keep attendance records, approve overtime, prioritize work assignments, give works assignments to employees, and manage/supervisor field performance of employees.
  • Represents the Chief of Police at community events, campus events, USNH events and/or meetings, along with addressing matters brought to their attention by respective UPD staff.
  • Management of all law enforcement and security needs and coordinate and fire/EMS and Emergency Management personnel for campus special events.
