Sr. Accountant - Commodity

Job Description

Primary Purpose

This position is responsible for the accounting of commodity transactions in support of Sempra Infrastructure business units. Responsibilities includes but not limited to validating energy transactions, month-end accounting, regulatory reporting, and developing standard operating procedures. This position will provide guidance to other accountants and serve as the back-up for team members.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the month-end process through preparation and/or review of appropriate reporting, journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Perform monthly commodity reconciliation to ensure compliance with contract terms. This includes validating pricing terms, product types, and point of delivery and receipt locations.
  • Complete commodity settlement process through third party confirmations, preparing billing statements, and facilitating payment requests. This includes trade discrepancy resolution with internal and external parties and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Manage monthly/quarterly/annual regulatory reporting requirements to ensure compliance with various governing agencies (i.e. DOE, EIA, EPA, & FERC). This includes support of the SOX compliance and audit requirements.
  • Implement settlement process for new contracts and/or projects as business dictates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related business administration field.
  • 5+ years' experience in professional accounting, finance, economic or equivalent training and/or Experience.
  • Advanced-level knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Strong spreadsheet skills required.

  • Must have the ability to identify issues, analyze data, develop, recommend, and implement solutions.
  • Must possess initiative, decision-making skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Must be able to work in team environment and effectively interact with others both internal & external customers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to details and able to work with large amounts of data, with technical skills to summarize, confirm, and reconcile its accuracy.
  • Ability to convey technical information in a clear and concise manner to various level of management.
  • A willingness to put forth additional effort and work extra hours when critical projects arise or as necessary.
  • Ability to muti-task and be flexible and able to switch quickly from one project to another when dictated by business need.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Experience with Endur trade capture system and energy industry experience with a working knowledge of commodity settlements is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the natural gas market and settlement process is highly desired.
  • Experience with accounting systems and knowledge of the month-end accounting close process is preferred.
  • CPA

HYBRID: Work a combination of onsite and remote days each week, typically 2-3 days per week.
