Scope of Position

The qualified Advanced Wind Technician performs unsupervised field maintenances on specific turbine types and has the ability to train others on maintenances and resets for these specific turbine types. The advanced level technician is expected to understand and follow procedures as provided through service manuals, Control Instructions, Work Instructions and other pertinent documents or instructions as provided by company supervisory personnel. The advanced technician is expected to know and follow established safety guidelines and will seek guidance in matters for which they may be uncertain or unfamiliar.

Responsibilities

    Complete unsupervised maintenances on individual turbines in a timely manner;
  • Safely perform rudimentary troubleshooting of wind turbine generators to include testing for the presents of low voltage (600 volts or less);
  • Complete resets on individual turbines;
  • Complete work orders, CI's for maintenances, inspection forms, etc;
  • Turbine lubrication as required;
  • Hydraulic adjustments as needed;
  • Accurately account for time and materials expended in performance of the job function;
  • Report for work at the time and location specified;
  • Operate service equipment in a safe and manner and maintain records for the same;
  • Follow safety regulations and work procedures. Seek guidance from a competent source for all work for which they are unfamiliar or do not feel safe performing;
  • Report on work status as directed;
  • All other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Advanced Wind Technicians spend 100% of their time in the field, excluding safety; supervisor and scheduled training exercises. Advanced Field Technicians work in teams and are provided a company vehicle (service truck) in which they carry the required tools and parts necessary to perform repairs and/or maintenance on turbines in multiple wind fields on any given day. Service Technicians work in extreme weather conditions.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; or up to one-year related experience or training; or combination of education and experience.
  • Mastery of an Advanced Level training program.
  • Must have completed at least 1000 documented hrs performing operations and maintenance in the wind and/or other related industry and meet requirements for the base field technician.
  • Must be able to instruct less experienced technicians for which they may be partnered, on how to complete maintenance for the turbine(s) they jointly maintain.
  • Must be competent at filling out work orders, CI's for maintenance, Inspection Forms, Parts Sheets, etc.
  • Capable of performing alignments in rotating equipment.
  • Skilled in the use of electrical test instruments for the purpose of checking for the presents of voltage and resistance measurements on de-energized circuits.
  • Competence in Generator wiring and knowledge of asynchronous generation theory.
  • Have an understanding of fasteners types and techniques.
  • Understand blade inspection, pitching and calibration.
  • Must have competency in rigging and crane signals
  • Must be able to read and interpret basic schematics and technical data.
  • Must have knowledge and be able to demonstrate competence in lubrication, hydraulic adjustments, gearbox inspections, QC reporting procedures, and bearing maintenances.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to:

  • Stand, climb, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear.
  • The employee is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work at heights, including climbing up and descending towers, entering nacelles and hubs at extreme heights.
  • Able to work in a mechanical environment. This may have been achieved through formal training, previous work experience as an auto mechanic or the ability to demonstrate that an individual is mechanically inclined.
  • Able to operate company vehicles (field trucks) both on site as well as on public roads and highways. Must have a current driver's license with a good DMV printout.
  • Demonstrate good work habits, including but not limited to attendance, and maintaining a neat and orderly work environment.

Special Conditions of Employment:

Physical Weight Limit Restriction

Due to weight restrictions associated with life-saving fall-arrest equipment employees are required to wear while working at heights, maximum employee weight must not exceed 285 lbs. Employee weight subject to review at any time throughout the duration of employment and required annually at a minimum.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to:

  • Extreme weather conditions, including cold, rain, wind, etc.
  • Moving mechanical parts and vibration
  • Confined spaces
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
