Other Conditions: Contingent on course offerings and student demand, to begin approximately August 2024, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. The position may be converted from 11 to 9 months or 9 to 11 months based on operational needs.  

Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate and oversee daily operations of the College’s Education Program, which encompasses the A.A. in Liberal Arts with concentrations and certificate programs in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Second Language Teaching, STEM Education.

• Teach and deliver ED courses in online, in-person, and hybrid modalities, utilizing technology and the College’s learning management system.

• Establish and maintain transfer articulation agreements with key institutions such as the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, College of Education, University of Hawai‘i-West Oahu, and other baccalaureate institutions offering teacher education programs.

• Develop, revise, and enhance ED program curricula and course content and regularly assess program and course learning outcomes to ensure continuous improvement.

• Integrate Hawai‘i Content Performance Standards (HCPS), Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and/or the Hawai‘i Early Learning Development Standards (HELDS), International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE); InTASC/Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) Teacher Performance Standards, and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Professional Standards into program and course curricula.

• Incorporate relevant learning and teaching theories, strategies, methods, and approaches into course content and apply research methodology and problem-based learning to address current issues in Education.

• Assist ED majors in the development of their academic, career, and/or personal plans through academic advising (including use of STAR) and referring students to on and off-campus support services as needed.

• Utilize student development theories and approaches to support ED majors with diverse abilities from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

• Foster collaborative relationships with colleagues in the ED program, College and UH system partners, HIDOE and private schools, community and professional organizations, and other teacher education programs.

• Pursue professional development opportunities to maintain currency in the field of Education.

• Seek grant opportunities to secure resources for ED majors, program improvements, and workforce development for HIDOE employees.

• Uphold and contribute to Kapi‘olani Community College’s values, mission, and vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution.

• Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include teaching evening and weekend classes, continuing-education classes, distance-education classes, and classes at off-campus sites.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in Education; OR

2. Bachelor’s degree in Education AND 3 years of related work experience.

Note: Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Doctorate (PhD or EdD) in Education.

2. Experience in program coordination at the post-secondary level, including establishing, and maintaining articulation agreements with UH system and other baccalaureate teacher education programs.

3. Experience in program and curriculum development, revision, and improvement at the post-secondary level, including assessment of program and course learning outcomes.

4. Demonstrated success (as substantiated by student and peer evaluations) in teaching online, in-person, and/or hybrid courses at the preK-12 and post-secondary levels in Education and/or other disciplines, including utilizing new or emerging technology and learning management systems for instruction.

5. Experience in student advising at the postsecondary level, focusing on academic, career, and personal goals, including referrals to relevant student support services.

6. Knowledge and application of teaching and learning theories, content standards, teacher professional standards, and contemporary Education issues.

7. Knowledge and application of student development theory at the postsecondary level, and experience serving a diverse student population, including individuals with disabilities and those from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

8. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the full range of internal and external university stakeholders, including preK-12 schools in Hawai`i, teacher education institutions, community organizations, and other relevant entities.

9. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and improvement, remaining current with best practices and innovations in the Education field.

10. Experience in grant writing, acquiring funding through grants, and/or grant coordination and administration to generate resources for student development, program improvement, and/or workforce development.

11. Knowledge of and commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College’s values, mission, and vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai‘i and the world.
