Essential Job Duties

The Duque-Wilckens Lab, part of the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University uses primary cell and organoid culture and transgenic mouse models in combination with molecular, pharmacological, and behavioral analyses to investigate the neuro-immune mechanisms underlying brain development and behavior and how they are shaped by the environment to promote resistance or vulnerability to mood disorders.

General Scope of Duties
We are looking to hire a passionate, self-motivated, positive, and collaborative research assistant (RA) to assist with lab management, coordination of operations related to multiple projects, and student mentoring in laboratory procedures. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with lab supplies stocking and organization, compliance with safety standards, mouse colony maintenance and genotyping, preparing standard media and solutions, and overall research support and data collection. Experience in mouse handling as well as routine laboratory molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry, DNA/RNA extraction, quantitative PCR, ELISAS, and Western Blots is required. The ideal candidate will also have experience in rodent behavioral data analysis and proficiency in software like DeepLabCut for creating supervised machine learning predictive classifiers of rodent social behaviors.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantive relevant independent experience and education

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Previous hands-on experience working as a technician or research assistant in a laboratory
  • Background and training in molecular biology and rodent behavior
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Knowledge of day-to-day management needs of a study

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in rodent handling and rodent behavioral neuroscience
  • Previous experience in basic and advanced molecular techniques such as PCR, IHC, RNA scope, Western blots
  • Any proficiency with software applications used for research/recording/analysis or working knowledge in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB
