Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Finance and Administration, the Finance/Accounting Coordinator is responsible for post-award management and administration of grants and contracts along with non-sponsored research commitments for faculty in the Department of Physics. This individual will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of faculty accounts, ensuring that resources are well managed, accurately reported and comply with federal and state regulations as well as University of Maryland policies and procedures. This position must adhere to University financial management standards, general management and accounting principles, practices, methods, and techniques. A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply various policies and procedures to real-world situations. In addition, a successful candidate must be enthusiastic, positive, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and have a demonstrable ability to take initiative.

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Experience:
  • 6 years (with a High School Diploma or GED) in a similar position is required.
  • 4 years (with an associate degree) in a similar position is required.
  • 2 years (with a bachelor’s degree) in a similar position is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • The incumbent must have the ability to coordinate multiple projects and deadlines as well as be a team player.
  • Must be adaptable, flexible, and able to manage a high volume of work.
  • The incumbent must be familiar with University policies and procedures as well as external funding source guidelines.
  • Must possess knowledge of Microsoft Office and financial tools.
  • Must be highly motivated and a team-oriented individual with a proactive and positive business approach focused on meeting the current and future financial needs of the Department.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Bachelors or Masters credits in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline is preferred. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Knowledge of OMB Federal-wide terms and conditions.
  • Possess quantitative skills and experience in the preparation of financial reports.
  • Experience working in a higher education administrative office or other research administration setting.
  • Experience with University specific accounting systems such as BA4 (Priority Software), KFS, Workday.
  • Experience with both research proposals and budget preparation and electronic research systems such as NSF Fastlane and Grants.gov.
  • Experience submitting proposals to the federal government.

Additional Information:

  • The starting annual salary is between $59K – $65K, commensurate with experience.
  • Up to 40% telework is available after successfully completing the onboarding period.
