The College and the District

College of San Mateo (CSM) is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is a Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution. The college enrolls approximately 15,000 students each academic year. CSM has a diverse student population that is a reflection of the communities that it serves. The Position

The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member in Biology with specialized experience in teaching human anatomy and physiology with cadavers. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s)of any particular position.   1. Teach lecture/lab sections of biology courses with a primary focus on human anatomy, physiology, and human biology
  2. Maintain, dissect, and utilize human cadavers for instructional purposes and assessment of student learning
  3. Develop and practice effective teaching strategies that foster success in students with diverse backgrounds, learning differences, interests, and abilities
  4. Develop and maintain expertise in the biological sciences discipline and integrate this learning into the curriculum and classroom
  5. Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development, department planning, and program review
  6. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance offerings of the Biology Department
  7. Participate, on an ongoing basis in the assessment and analysis of student learning
  8. Provide one-to-one and small group support to students at office hours and open Anatomy Lab
  9. Participate in department, division, and college meetings and committees
  10. Teach day and evening classes as required by the college
  11. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a Master’s or above in any biological science OR Bachelor’s in any biological science AND Master’s or above in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science, OR the equivalent (see below)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Subject matter preparation:
  1. Recent successful experience in teaching human anatomy, physiology, and human biology in a community college to students preparing to work in allied health fields, such as nursing
  2. Experience maintaining, dissecting, and using human cadavers for instruction and assessment of student learning
  3. Experience developing and teaching inquiry-and research-based labs in human physiology
Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:
  1. Genuine enthusiasm for and deep understanding of the role and purpose of the community college in fostering accessible and equitable education for all students, with a commitment to humanizing pedagogy that prioritizes student well-being, inclusion, and empowerment
  2. Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and continuously improve one’s pedagogical approaches to enhance student learning outcomes, particularly by incorporating humanizing pedagogical strategies that acknowledge and affirm students’ diverse identities and experiences
  3. Proven expertise in effectively teaching both online and hybrid courses, utilizing innovative instructional technologies and pedagogical techniques to create engaging and supportive virtual learning environments
  4. Ability to employ teaching methods within biology lecture and laboratory courses that not only transmit content knowledge but also actively engage students, foster critical thinking skills, and promote cooperation and collaboration among diverse student populations
  5. Extensive experience in addressing differential achievement rates among students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds, through the implementation of inclusive teaching practices and targeted support interventions
  6. A commitment to maintaining transparent and equitable assessment practices, including consistently and appropriately assessing student progress, providing constructive feedback, and employing communication best practices to keep students informed and engaged in their learning journey. This includes utilizing culturally responsive assessment strategies that honor students’ diverse ways of knowing and demonstrating understanding
Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:
  1. Demonstrated initiative and a strong commitment to working collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum development, and student success, with a specific focus on fostering inclusivity and addressing the needs of racially minoritized, LGBTQIA+, and other disproportionately impacted students
  2. Proven track record of actively engaging in professional responsibilities beyond the classroom, including making meaningful contributions to departmental, divisional, and college-wide activities aimed at promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion. This may include participation in committees, task forces, or initiatives dedicated to addressing systemic barriers and fostering a more inclusive campus environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized, LGBTQIA+, and other disproportionately impacted students in the classroom, with a strong emphasis on addressing antiblackness and promoting inclusivity. Understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to critically examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized, LGBTQIA+, and other disproportionately impacted students, including being comfortable having conversations about race, racism, and LGBTQIA+ issues
  • Experience and skill in facilitating active learning, discussion, and peer-instruction within science lecture courses, while fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all students, regardless of their backgrounds
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices, with a commitment to promoting equity and diversity within this context
