Research Laboratory Operations Manager

Job Description

RESEARCH LABORATORY OPERATIONS MANAGER, Chemistry, to manage all facets of the research group of Professor Mircea Dincă, including the design, discovery, and utilization of new materials for energy and environmental applications.  There will be both technical and administrative responsibilities, including writing and preparing grant proposals, scientific editing, organizing scientific information, project and financial management, and managing interactions with collaborators and funding agencies (i.e., preparing reports/presentations/project plans, coordinating meetings, transfer of deliverables, etc.). May have the opportunity to represent the group and Professor Dinca at scientific meetings, present research from the group, and undertake collaborations with scientists in the U.S. and abroad.  Responsibilities include ensuring the smooth functioning of the laboratory and overseeing day-to-day operations; facilitating technology transfer and leading interactions with MIT internal organizations; serving as X-ray facilitator; editing, submitting, and depositing manuscripts to open-access repositories; personnel management; organizing activities/events; coordinating researcher visits from industry/academia; providing guidance/training on general lab operations; and supporting and mentoring undergraduate researchers/graduate students/postdoctoral scholars/visitors.  May also become involved in budget management.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry; five years’ experience in an academic, research, or nonprofit environment; expertise with advanced X-ray and electron diffraction techniques and spectroscopies; advanced-level computational chemistry skills; meticulous attention to detail; self-motivation; excellent project management, organizational, financial, administrative, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and promote collaboration, anticipate needs, multitask, and set and manage priorities; discretion and diplomacy; and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, ChemDraw, MATLAB, and X-ray refinement/visualization software.  PREFERRED:  synthetic inorganic and organic chemistry expertise as applied to the design, synthesis, and advanced multifaceted characterization of porous materials.  Job #23877
