Overview

This Lab Manager role is responsible for facilitating management of the Molecular Cancer Imaging Facility’s laboratory equipment, radioactive and non-radioactive materials, and radioactive and non-radioactive logistics. The lab manager will also perform radiolabeling and quality control testing of radiolabeled products as well as perform limited non-radioactive synthetic support functions for the group. Responsibility will include maintenance of DOT class 7 shipper certification and training of other technical staff to provide back-up coverage for functions pertaining to the movement of radioactive materials into and out of the facility.  This individual will report directly to the MCIF scientific director.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations 

  • Institute, maintain, and improve standard operating procedures for laboratory processes relating radiation safety and MCIF workflows.  
  • Responsible for materials management (chemicals, lab supplies, and equipment). Interface with the purchasing department and the receiving department to coordinate purchases and delivery, if necessary, of materials, including radioisotopes. Submit, track, and manage POs. 
  • Responsible for radioactive materials management (ordering, receiving, inventory, shipping/logistics, and waste, establish and maintain relationships with suppliers – isotopes and otherwise) (e.g. NRC regulations, DOT and IATA regulations) 
  • Maintain status as an approved DOT class 7 shipper of radioactive materials - Planning and executing routine packaging and shipping of radiolabeled products. Performing required package testing per DOT requirements for release of radioactive materials for delivery. 
  • Responsible for the proper disposal of all radioactive waste, sharps and hazardous liquid waste and maintain all required documentation for traceability, liaising directly with DFCI’s radiation safety office 
  • Internal and external regulatory agency (MADPH) inspection support 
  • Assume the role of MCIF Laboratory Safety Officer – MCIF compliance with DFCI EHS and RSO protocols 
  • MCIF equipment maintenance (HPLC, GC, TLC, dose calibrators) - In house equipment support (scheduled maintenance and troubleshooting) for analytical equipment and radiosynthesis modules. 
  • Dose calibrator quality control (Geometry, accuracy, constancy, linearity) for DOT compliance and MCIF standards 

Scientific Operations 

  • Maintain relationships/communication with external groups/companies - Plan and manage internal and external communications proactively, ensuring effective and timely exchange of information pertaining to lab manager’s role. 
  • Active intellectual involvement in research projects is encouraged. 
  • Operate analytical equipment for quality control testing of radiolabeled compounds 
  • Operate, clean, and maintain GE radiosynthesis modules 
  • Perform synthetic and radiosynthetic techniques such as including protein conjugations of bifunctional chelators, radiolabeling etc. 
  •  

Administrative 

  • Responsible for managing efficient and effective administration of laboratory protocols and research materials/stocks.  
  • Identify new vendors and work with current external vendors to ensure reliable and redundant supply of radioisotopes and other laboratory materials. 
  • Perform and oversee internal audits and self-inspections to identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance. Assist the facility in the preparation of quality audits and participate in internal and external inspections as needed. 
  • Ensures all lab staff are compliant with DFCI EHS and RSO mandatory trainings.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  

  • Exceptional organization skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task to enable many concurrent projects in a complex, fast paced environment.  
  • Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort in working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints; openness to new ideas.  
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline required; Master’s degree preferred 
  • Experience handling radioactive materials 
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in management of research laboratory in the field of radiochemistry 
  • Solid communication, organizational, and writing skills  
  • Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance and record keeping
