Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland serves as the catalyst for high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that will address the 21st century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, to accelerating entrepreneurship, and to transforming research and learning activities into new innovations that benefit millions.

The primary purpose of this position will be to develop innovative ways to advance and assess student learning and development beyond the classroom by leading efforts to better integrate student engagement and growth through co-curricular experiences across and outside of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Faculty Specialist will develop an agenda to build, maintain, and assess high-impact learning outcomes and provide driven co-curricular engagement opportunities. In support of these goals, this position will act as a liaison for the Department, including strong community engagement efforts, interfacing with students, the community, and external partners from the WTCC.

The position responsibilities include, but is not limited to, the following duties:

  • Oversee the creation and delivery of programming to enhance experiential learning and its impact on student learning.
  • Work collaboratively with the Department chair, faculty, staff, and students, as well as industry partners, to develop new offerings and revitalize existing programs within the undergraduate portfolio.
  • Engage with the entire Department to facilitate an ongoing discussion concerning the role of experiential learning in the mission and vision of the Department, College, and University.
  • Serve as an advocate for experiential learning: promote faculty interest in and the development of experiential learning opportunities embedded in or as a co-curricular accompaniment to their courses and serve as a resource for faculty and staff with questions about best practices in experiential learning.
  • Work with faculty and staff to create opportunities for upper-class students to serve as peer mentors and facilitators for experiential learning, following best practices in peer mentorship.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement an experiential learning assessment plan.
  • Work in collaboration with others to identify and pursue possible outside funding sources for experiential learning.
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy to advance high-impact experiential learning as a signature element of the Department.
  • Willing to travel (in state) on a regular basis to facilitate the experiential learning program.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.

Experience:
  • 5-7 years’ experience in education, including creation, implementation, and assessment of student-facing programming or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of pedagogical theory and best practices related to experiential learning across various domains, e.g., internships, research, global immersion, community engagement, and entrepreneurship.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with faculty, staff, students, external partners, and the community at large.
  • Proven experience with strategic planning, programming, project, human capital, and resource management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with applying essential principles of experiential learning to bridge the transition between K-12 and higher education.
  • Ability to manage competing demands and navigate constructive change in a fast-paced and challenging environment.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to travel (in state) on a regular basis to facilitate the experiential learning program
