The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at North Carolina State University is a world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The college’s comprehensive approach to teaching, research, and service encompass the many and varied ways in which people’s physical, economic, and social needs are met through the wise use of natural resources.

Primary duties of the Postdoctoral Research Scholar include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Knowledge of molecular biology is essential
  • Knowledge of Bioinformatics and associated software
  • Experience in the development of molecular markers and marker assisted breeding preferred
  • Specialization in genetic improvement of plants; understanding of commercial plant breeding systems
  • Mastery of statistical software
  • Experience participating in the realization of a selection program, or similar experimental experience
  • Assist with the establishment and design of all genetic field tests for the Christmas tree genetics program
  • Assist with the development of genotyping panels to facilitate ‘breeding without breeding’ in fir.
  • Evaluate OP progeny tests based on half-sibling relationships within OP family
  • Implement a BWB approach for Abies (Fraser/Turkish/Trojan)
  • Assist with and guide development of low-cost, high-throughput genotyping assay by working with commercial providers (TBD).
  • Utilize SNP marker array development to identify genomic regions unique to haploid genomes
  • Should have familiarity with bioinformatics approaches
  • Assist with and potentially lead genome sequencing efforts in Abies species
  • Design a population sampling strategy to assist with the development of genotyping panels.
  • Apply genotyping panels to facilitate recurrent selections from existing progeny tests using retrospective analyses of Fraser, noble and other exotic conifer trees.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Occasional out of town travel will be needed for field work or to present findings at scientific meetings.

Department Required Skills

  • Experience with plant breeding and/or research on the application of breeding technology and relevant biotechnologies that promote plant improvement.
  • Experience in carrying out plant breeding activities in the field. Working experience in tree improvement is an asset.
  • Experience in the application of biotechnologies for plant breeding, such as advanced genomic technologies and marker assisted selection.
  • Experience in high quality research related to plant breeding and genetics as evidenced in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English.
  • Experience with teaching and training (students, technicians, visiting scholars).

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Knowledge of forestry and plant propagation skills including: grafting, media mixing, plant care and maintenance, and sample collection.
  • Ability to problem solve and apply creative solutions to various problems that may arise.
  • Interest in plant specialized metabolism/biochemistry (i.e. terpenes, phenolics, etc.).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in academic publishing and grant writing.
  • Ability to self-motivate to work independently and also as a part of a team on multiple research projects and teams simultaneously.
