About the Department

The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide NCSU faculty with optimal animal resources at the least practical cost. The term “animal resources” includes not only animal housing facilities, but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in laboratory animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use. LAR is responsible for assisting faculty in conducting animal experimentation in keeping with these standards, and is committed to assuring the well-being of experimental animals while providing services that facilitate their humane and judicious use.

Essential Job Duties

The LAR Training Coordinator is responsible for the training of staff daily care of animals used in research and teaching along with the maintaining of records. Duties may include husbandry, record keeping, administration of medications, and animal enrichment. This position is classified as mandatory personnel and may require weekend and holiday work.

Additionally, this position is responsible for, but not limited to:
  • Daily care of animals.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of a tracking database(s) of all training received by each employee.
  • Trains facility users on policy and practices.
  • Update and write SOPs.
  • Identify internal and external training programs to address competency gaps.
  • Assist with billing on an as needed basis.
  • Provide and perform other training duties as requested.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate animal records
  • Perform basic animal husbandry on a wide variety of species
  • Administer routine medications
  • Maintain sanitation and safety procedures in accordance to regulations

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of animal husbandry
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to maintain accurate animal census records, daily room logs and medical treatment logs
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Ability to understand, update and compile Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in animal husbandry
  • Experience in a wide variety of species care, AALAS certifications
  • Experience training other staff

Required License or Certification

Valid NC Driver’s license or the ability to obtain NC license within 60 days of hire.
