We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate potential linkages between passive acoustic measurements in coastal environments to other potential metrics of marine biodiversity and animal behavior. The researchers would be co-advised by Dr. Nathan Furey (Fish and Movement Ecology Lab within the Department of Biological Sciences) and Dr. Jennifer Miksis-Olds (Center for Acoustics Research and Education within the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space) at the University of New Hampshire. The researcher will also engage with collaborators via the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network. The researcher will have access to passive acoustics data collected in coastal New Hampshire (Isles of Shoals) and Maine (Casco Bay) waters in 2023, as well as data to be collected in 2024 (funds are available for data collection in 2025 as well). Via parallel efforts, there will be opportunities to link passive acoustics data with environmental DNA (eDNA), active acoustics, fish and seabird telemetry, and fish and seabird diet data. The postdoctoral scholar will characterize broad metrics of marine soundscapes, with opportunities to conduct species-specific analyses as well (i.e., Atlantic cod, marine mammals, etc.).

Work location is Durham, NH. We will consider a remote appointment for the right candidate.

We are seeking an individual with a PhD with expertise in collecting, processing, and analyzing passive acoustics data. Ideally the researcher would have experience in both characterizing broad metrics of diversity in marine sound as well as taxa-specific analyses (auto detector development for specific species). Applicants should demonstrate strong programming, statistical, and visualization skills. In addition, the researcher should have a strong record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and communicating their research via presentations and other means. We hope the researcher will be excited to work closely with graduate and undergraduate researchers in the Fish and Movement Ecology Lab and participate in the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network and Center for Acoustics Research and Education.
