If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

 

We are seeking an Accounting Manager for our General Accounting Section to supervise, lead, and mentor a team of approximately ten to fifteen accountants of varying levels of experience. The primary responsibilities of the team include processing and maintenance of all general ledger financial data, accurate and timely financial reporting and analysis of that information, cash management (timely month-end and year-end closings), Indirect Cost Submission, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), and benefits accounting rules and regulations.

 

 

The Section Supervisor will define expectations, implement guidance and policies, perform and present key financial analysis of operating results, review financial statement packages, supervise the Oracle General Ledger (GL) and Projects (PA) systems and administration to include all accounting close requirements, coordinate and be responsible for indirect cost burdening and allocations, supervise fixed assets and capitalization accounting activities, and work with internal and external audit teams. They will work closely with the CFO and department leadership to assist with special projects. They will also partner with other Section Supervisors in the Group, as well as leadership teams across the Laboratory, to improve the team’s impact to the organization, and to build and sustain a culture of excellence and cross-enterprise collaboration.

Organizational Competencies:

Draft personnel requisitions, interview candidates, collaborate on the hiring decisions, and share functional/technical knowledge within and beyond the section. Implement practices that ensure compliance with contractual and federal regulations. Resource the section at the correct level and ensure responsibilities and skills are appropriately aligned. Work collaboratively across the Department and APL to foster a partnering approach that elevates the team’s impact to the organization. Facilitate and lead the implementation of section level operational transformation initiatives.

 

Staff Development:
Develop and coach staff as vital, including receiving partner feedback throughout the year. Provide performance coaching, and encourage the professional development of the staff in their section. Inspire and empower employees to instill a culture that embraces excellence, a solution-oriented approach and a story-telling mentality, diversity of thought, inclusion, and continuous improvement. Provide resources needed to train and develop the staff to meet current and emerging needs. Communicate often with the team regarding organizational vision and provide continual feedback and coaching support. Identify and develop key talent for future leadership roles.

 

Operational Competencies:
Ensure the section has the resources, facilities, and tools needed to meet its mission. Promote the highest standards of excellence on every project. Assess, interpret, and advise on operational and financial strategies, as well as large and complex accounting changes driven by new governing rules and regulations (GAAP, CAS, and FAR), that enables APL leadership to realize their business objectives. Provide support to significant organizational changes; identify emerging opportunities and challenges; coordinate and oversee indirect burdening and allocations; ensure compliance with GAAP, CAS, and FAR standards and effectiveness of financial risk management activities; and review and track high-priority tasks. Support the ongoing evolution of the group, including the expansion and implementation of new tool-sets.


Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration (with a concentration in Accounting)
  • 10 years of professional experience in general accounting
  • 5 years of relevant experience in a DoD contracting environment
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Masters of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Advanced competency and proficiency related to general accounting such as financial statement presentation in accordance with GAAP, general ledger month-end and year-end closings and reporting, and audit coordination
  • Sound working knowledge of GAAP, CAS, FAR standards/regulations
  • Proven ability to think strategically and lead valuable change in a useful and sustainable manner
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills, including the ability to effectively communicate at all organizational levels
  • Highly developed analytical skills with problem-solving aptitude at a conceptual level demonstrated in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Outstanding attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of business and office applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook -- sophisticated Excel knowledge expected

  • Supervisory or other leadership experience
  • Demonstrated understanding and working knowledge of APL business systems including Oracle General Ledger, Oracle Projects, and Data Warehouse applications
  • Working knowledge of Indirect Cost Submission
