About the Department

The Department of Forest Biomaterials has responsibilities for teaching, research and extension activities. It awards undergraduate degrees in Paper Science and Engineering, and Sustainable Materials and Technology; and distance Masters, MS, and PhD degrees in Forest Biomaterials. The Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University is a full-service ecosystem advancing the future of biomaterials from educating future leaders to supporting industry and government research. It is part of the College of Natural Resources (CNR), where “the planet is our classroom,” and is also affiliated with the College of Engineering. Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forest Biomaterials at NC State University is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position that combines wood products extension (70%) with academic teaching, research, and service (30%). The successful candidate will be part of an eight-person sustainability team that consists of three Wood Products Extension faculty and five Sustainable Materials and Technology (SMT) academic faculty. This position is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, but the successful candidate will have to travel throughout North Carolina occasionally. The successful candidate will provide leadership in designing, implementing, and evaluating public educational programs consistent with the philosophy, policy, and overall educational objectives of North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Major responsibilities include:
  • Develop an innovative, state-wide extension program for the wood products industry.
  • Perform discipline-guided inquiry that is in line with their Extension program.
  • Seek external funding in support of extension-relevant projects that support graduate students and expands the impact and reach of their extension program.
  • Teach one undergraduate class per year in the Sustainable Materials & Technology program.
  • Engage in service to the department, college, Cooperative Extension, university, and profession.

The preferred candidate will have a degree in Industrial Engineering or an aligned field (e.g. material science, wood science), with knowledge, skills, or industrial experience in one or more
of the following areas:
  • Advanced manufacturing of biomaterials.
  • Use of process data to improve efficiency, yield, and/or quality of processing of wood products.
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to characterize and process materials, such as wood, natural fibers, composites, etc.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering, Wood Products, or closely related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability and desire to develop and conduct an effective extension and education program in cooperation with faculty, staff, and industry
  • A strong commitment to extension, academic, and research excellence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using innovative technology transfer techniques.
  • Potential to attract and secure funding for proposed scholarly and extension work from federal agencies and other sources.
  • Ability to develop and maintain contacts with relevant state, county, and municipal agencies and departments.
  • Willingness to drive extended distances statewide.
  • Ability to apply professional scheduling including the delivery of evening and weekend educational programs and activities as determined by programmatic and collaboration needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Advanced Manufacturing and Wood Products or related field.
  • Knowledge of industrially relevant manufacturing processes, strategies, and innovations.
  • A track record of work in the use of AI and data science for the development, assessment, and processing of materials, especially biomaterials.
  • Experience with automation, optimization, digital fabrication, and big data.
  • Knowledge of the Land Grant Mission and the role of Extension.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in non-formal settings, including but not limited to demonstrations, workshops, and public events.
