Essential Job Duties:
We are seeking to hire a community engagement specialist. As an integral member of the research team, the community engagement specialist will perform a variety of duties in support of health research studies including identifying and engaging community organizations, onboarding and managing study ambassadors, recruiting study participants, administering informed consent, coordinating sample collection and submission, and collecting, documenting, and managing data and information, including documenting best practices.
Specific duties will include but are not limited to:

As an integral member of the research team, the community engagement specialist will perform a variety of duties in support of health research studies including identifying and engaging community organizations, onboarding and managing study ambassadors, recruiting study participants, administering informed consent, coordinating sample collection and submission, and collecting, documenting, and managing data and information, including documenting best practices.
Specific duties will include but are not limited to:
- Identify and engage community organizations (e.g. nonprofits, faith communities, healthcare organizations, educational institutions) in Pamlico, Vance, and contiguous counties of NC
- Work with these organizations to increase awareness of scientific research and to recruit study ambassadors and participants
- Participate in recruitment activities including putting up flyers in the community/clinic, attending community events/ services/meetings, and/or using other established methods of communication in the community
- Recruit participants for a research study and organize sample collection events at community locations
- Administer informed consent including describing study procedures as well as risks and benefits of participation to study participants
- 6. Collect data and samples related to the study and work with the Project Manager to ensure all activities are completed
- Maintain electronic and paper project files; this includes the use of Google Suite, Redcap, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and other computer applications
- Assist field staff and project manager with collecting, tracking, organizing, and transporting data and samples.
- May perform other duties incidental to research activities as assigned
The individual in this position may focus only on a subset of these responsibilities depending on staffing needs and the number of hours worked.

Minimum Experience/Education
- Four-year degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and five years of related training or experience, or combination of training and experience necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications:
- Proven ability to interact harmoniously with different groups of individuals
- Experience in the research/ community engagement field
- Ability to interact with individuals of all ages, ranging from age 2 to age 75
- Friendly and outgoing attitude
- Comfort and willingness to approach and interface with people in a community and home visit setting
- Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and writing, organization, and planning skills
- Ability to comply with study rules and best practices; willingness to work with the study team to improve and document best practices for future reference
- Familiarity with MS Office and other applications for data entry, communication, and scheduling
- Ability to get to and from office to community events in the greater central North Carolina area and surrounding regions including the ability to transport study-related supplies, samples, and documentation as needed
- Driver’s license and access to a car; all mileage will be reimbursed
- Ability to operate and prioritize under strict deadlines within a team environment
- Exercises sound judgment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Leadership skills and proven track record of accountability
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
• Previous research experience and/or familiarity with research and data collection methods is beneficial
• Interest in public health research; an interest in or familiarity with disparities research would also be helpful, but not required
