The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.

Essential Job Duties

This position provides after hours oversight in both the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center. Both hospitals are composed of Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Kennel Staff and Client Service Staff, all uniquely trained in various areas to provide support for patients and clients needing specialized care for an array of small and large animal elective and non-elective treatments and procedures.

A person in this position must possess advanced knowledge of veterinary medicine in both small and large animals, and a strong desire to work with a team of diverse individuals, providing guidance and leadership in a fast paced environment. A person in this position will need to have excellent critical thinking skills to be able to question, analyze, interpret and apply inductive and deductive reasoning quickly and efficiently in order to manage a variety of situations

The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with management duties to include, but are not limited to;
  • Acts as a liaison between hospital administration, departmental supervisors, and clinicians to ensure that patient to technician ratios are appropriately distributed, SOPs are followed, transfer of patients from one department to another are planned and an overall support of communication between all departments.
  • Reports to Hospital Administrator & Directors daily for updates and strategies on upcoming staffing and patient care needs. Informs area supervisors of staffing changes and needs within departments
  • Ensures that all patients in these areas will receive high quality care by monitoring and managing the flow of patients, staffing needs and communications. The incumbent will be responsible for actively managing teams with frequent and direct communication on day to day responsibilities and coordination with technicians and clinicians to determine workflow related to case assignment, on-call needs, redistribution of staffing, and after-hours consultations with faculty and/or administration.
  • Partners with hospital and college leadership to manage after hours needs for the Friends of the College(FOC) program. Necessitating direct client communication, coordination of visit, and liaise with the FOC manager for continuation of care
  • Communicates with clients and rDVM to assist with any challenging communication and/or billing issues.
  • Responsible for after hours funding requests, including; review, verification of criteria, approval/denial and collection of all necessary documentation
  • Ability to resolve complex, unanticipated situations through identification, de-escalation, and notification
  • Carry out employee relations processes including; risk assessment, concerning behavior assessment, QPR strategies, and safety reporting
  • Conducts shift performance management; ensuring human resources policies and related information are shared with employees; Supervise and coach through complex work situations; resolution of problematic employee issues
  • Participates in interview and candidate selection process
  • Oversees training for all new after hours employees & students through collaborative efforts with departmental supervisors & training technicians through review of training manuals, SOP, and other educational platforms
  • Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives in areas of responsibility including SOPS, patient care, safety, billing, charge capture and reconciliation.
  • Aids in the development and implementation of the mission, goals and objectives of the NC State Veterinary Hospital. Assists administrators along with each supervisor in the planning, coordination and implementation of initiatives, training modules, and hospital wide goals
  • Oversees all record documentation with a variety of data relating to communications, billing, and patient care with use of hospital information systems.
  • Oversees orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
  • Ensures staff are following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
  • Prepares department and staff for an array of inspections

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Previous experience with equine and farm animal patients
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician preferably at a teaching hospital.
  • Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
  • Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program.
