Art Studios Safety Technician, Art & Design

Class Description

The purpose of this class is to support Art & Design studios at CCBC Essex and CCBC Catonsville and to perform the associated duties.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an Art and Design field from an accredited academic institution, B.F.A. preferred. 

Two (2) full-time equivalent years’ of experience as a technician or student lab aide in an instructional, industrial studio, or equivalent related experience preferred.The successful candidate will receive and retain OHSA Authorized General Industry Trainer certification.

Valid driver’s license with a record of less than five (5) points as this position will require some travel to various campuses as deemed necessary

Class Specific Essential Duties

  1. Maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
  2. Collects and analyzes data that can improve efficiency.
  3. Travel and maintain scheduled weekly hours at multiple CCBC campuses with primary responsibilities at CCBC Essex and Catonsville.
  4. Maintain inventory, order supplies, receive and transport supply orders, maintain purchasing records.
  5. Maintain all records pertinent to daily studio operations including purchasing and safety in all studios.
  6. Work with instructors in the operation of assigned area.
  7. Assist students and faculty in assigned area.
  8. Assist in the supervision of student aides and temporary/hourly staff in assigned studios
  9. Prepare materials and equipment for use during classes.
  10. Perform in-class instruction on supplemental issues.
  11. Provide training for new part-time associates and work study students.
  12. Maintain chemical and studio safety standards, participate in the development and implementation of practices and materials intended to support a culture of safety.

Position Specific Essential Duties

  1. Provide studio support at CCBC Essex and Catonsville, including maintaining inventory, purchasing supplies and equipment, and maintaining related records.  Areas of oversight include studio classrooms and facilities in ceramics (high and low fire), 3d design, sculpture (woodworking and metal fabrication) printmaking, digital fabrication, black and white photography, drawing, painting, and design.
  2. Work under the supervision of the Art & Design Department Chair and in collaboration with Art and Design Coordinators, Art and Design faculty, other technicians, part-time associates, and CCBC Facilities, among others. 
  3. Ensure that facilities equipment and material are prepared for scheduled studio activities.
  4. Maintain all assigned studios and studio preparation areas in a clean and organized manner.
  5. Participate in the development, study of, selection, modification and adoption of instructional technology/materials, and trains faculty and students in their use.
  6. Train work study students, interns, and temporary hourly employees. Plan and prepare their work assignments and assigns specific duties in support of studios in collaboration with Department Chair, coordinators, and faculty. 
  7. Coordinate with CCBC’s Director of Environmental Safety and Art & Design Coordinators ensuring that an active inventory of Safety Data Sheets is maintained and uploaded for all studio locations.
  8. Facilitate the scheduled removal of hazardous waste.
  9. Enforce safety regulations and policies. This may include art studio practices, proper handling and disposal of hazardous wastes, routine safety maintenance operations and appropriate PPE.
  10. Coordinate with other campus departments and external agencies, such as waste disposal companies, College Safety and Security and Plant Operations and Federal State and County environmental agencies, to accomplish CCBC compliance with relevant regulations and laws. 
  11. Travel regularly to multiple CCBC campuses for meetings and to support instruction at other campuses as determined necessary by the school leadership.
