General Summary

 | Work with the Dean of the School to develop graduation pathways and help students envision their ultimate academic and career goals. The nation’s most prestigious recognition of Community College Excellence, the Aspen Institute’s Aspen Prize, awarded Odessa College its Rising Star Award in 2017, which ranked Odessa College among the top five in the nation for improving and advancing student achievement out of 1100 eligible institutions. 

Specific Position Duties

Maintains up-to-date knowledge in Horticulture; Demonstrates willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and as reasonably requested by the college including Dual Credit classes; Utilizes appropriately challenging coursework to help students realize their full potential as learners; Provides students with written expectations, e.g., syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, graded evaluations. Deliver lectures, conduct laboratory or field exercises in a clear and understandable manner, and assess and grade student performance. Conduct practical demonstrations to help students understand and apply horticultural principles. Courses may cover various aspects of horticulture, such as plant propagation, crop production, landscape design, greenhouse management, and pest management. Contribute to the development and improvement of the horticulture curriculum. Administers assessments which are appropriate to course content, including a comprehensive final exam measuring overall grasp of course objectives;  Maintains an appropriate learning and assessment climate in the classroom, whether traditional, web, or distance, which encourages the free exchange of ideas while defending academic honesty and objectivity; Prepares adequately for class and arrives promptly at class meetings, labs, and any other scheduled instructional activities; Addresses student concerns, i.e., comments, questions, and input, both in class and via posted office hours, timely electronic communication, and other suitable means; Submits required reports and schedules in a timely manner to the department chair; Maintains effective relationships with professional counterparts throughout the college and the community; Actively participates in college functions and events; Oversee and monitor student degree progress; Assist students with educational goals and transitions; Collaborate regularly with school Success Coaches; Communicate scheduling needs and challenges for completion to school Dean; Collaborate with Academic Partnerships on matriculation; Develop and facilitate industry and community engagement.     

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree with 18 or more graduate hours in Horticulture or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution; Demonstrated knowledge in the use of current and emerging technologies for instruction; Ability to teach all courses in the Horticulture curriculum; Ability to teach students from a wide spectrum of ages and from diverse cultural and social backgrounds; and Ability to inspire, motivate and empower students to succeed
