Novartis Biologics Research Center (BRC) is a leader at the cutting edge of innovative medicine development to improve patient lives. BRC builds the biologics pipeline in collaboration with Novartis Biomedical Research (NBR) Disease Areas and Platforms via a breadth of technologies for discovery of antibody, protein, gene therapy and RNA-based therapeutics.
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to contribute to gene therapy development as part of the global community of investigators in the Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT) group within BRC. The successful candidate will work at the cutting edge of gene therapy biodistribution, platform and technology research to model and test priorities in translational research. The successful candidate will be a collaborative scientist experienced in molecular biology experiments, liquid handling automation and/or NGS sequencing.
Key responsibilities:
*Lead in vivo biodistribution and platform analysis projects as part of internal CGT programs
*Implement molecular and cellular biology assays to analyze in vitro and in vivo samples for viral vector based gene therapy characterization with techniques such as PCR/qPCR/dPCR, IF/IHC, and/or ELISA/MSD
*Develop molecular biology assays for the specific needs of internal CGT programs
*Implement liquid handling & automation protocols as part of experiments to increase analysis capabilities and throughput and/or operate next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform instrumentation (Illumina, PacBio, etc.) and analyze data from targeted experiments
*Research, develop and onboard new and emerging techniques and technologies for in vivo CGT analysis
*Use current and new technologies to contribute to CGT platform development
*Prepare quality data sets and reports adhering to the good research practices and quality culture across BRC
*Present results at appropriate internal and external meetings and conferences

Role Requirements

*Scientific background with an BS in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline with 1+ years of academic or industry lab related experience. Industry experience is preferred. Masters preferred.
*This lab-based position is located in San Diego, CA and will not have the ability to be located remotely
*Experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques (such as digital PCR, ELISA, IF/IHC NGS, nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, and/or transcriptomics) is required
*Willingness to independently pursue assay and technological development of molecular biology techniques to advance gene therapy
*The position requires the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team centric scientific environment and adaptability to emerging project/group needs, excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, and strong interpersonal skills
Desirable Requirements:
*Experience with liquid handling automation and writing related protocols using programming language is highly desired
*Experience with operating next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform instrumentation (Illumina, PacBio, etc.) and analysis of short-read and long-read sequencing data is also desired
*Experience with Hamilton Venus software is preferred
*Experience with laser capture microscopy, single cell genomics and/or spatial genomics also preferred
*Experience in animal models, viral vector based gene therapy and delivery, and molecular virology are highly desired

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary:
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $80,000 and $120,000 /year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team
