About the Department

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

Essential Job Duties

This position will serve as a Research Assistant to Dr. Sharara’s workgroup, with projects focusing on greenhouse gas emissions measurement on animal production farms (primarily dairy farms).

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in formulating methods and protocols for measurements of greenhouse gas emissions on dairy farms in North Carolina.
  • Collect and analyze emission monitoring data during multiple sampling campaigns.
  • Collect and handle samples for analysis and characterization.
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized equipment for data collection.
  • Communicate with equipment manufacturers for technical support and issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with and mentor students on relevant tasks and/or projects.
  • Assume responsibility for the custody, organization, and quality control of collected data.
  • Draft and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to data collection and analysis.
  • Contribute to scientific presentations, manuscripts, and project reports.
  • Travel to various locations within North Carolina for project-related activities.

This position will require driving university vehicles as needed for fieldwork (a valid driver’s license is required).

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree in Biological Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Crop and Soil Sciences, or related field
OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Crop and Soil Sciences, or related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality and recommending solutions for research projects.
  • Ability to work independently on the collection of data and analyze research results for certain aspects of a research project(s).
  • Experience in operating and troubleshooting equipment related to greenhouse gas emissions measurement.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with equipment manufacturers and students.
  • Ability to travel within North Carolina for fieldwork.
  • Organizational skills for data management and SOP documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering or in Crop and Soil Sciences.
  • Experience with research, fieldwork, and handling instruments related to greenhouse gas measurements.

A valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
