The Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research serves as a meeting place for the people and ideas furthering more equitable community college outcomes. Working with educators, researchers, policymakers and other key stakeholders from across North Carolina and the country, we distill knowledge into actionable insights, create opportunities for collaboration, and equip community college leaders to tackle their most pressing issues.
Essential Job Duties
The Director of Research provides vision and leadership for the research, evaluation, and survey functions in the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research. The Director serves as the research liaison to our partner organizations (NC Community College System, UNC System Office and other statewide and national collaborative partners). This role reports directly to the Executive Director and works in collaboration with the Deputy Director and senior leadership within the center (including the advisory board, professors of practice and affiliate faculty).
- Provides research management and oversight of all research and evaluation work in the Belk Center
- Assists the Executive Director in the development and execution of the research agenda
- Develops and manages new research projects from design and analysis to presentation and communication of findings, effectively using quantitative and qualitative resources
- Supervises two associate directors that also lead a team of postdoctoral scholars and doctoral students
- Collaborates with community leaders, staff from other NC State departments, external partners and stakeholders to accomplish data and research outcomes
- Represents the Belk Center at relevant external state and national-level conferences and convenings
- Maintains an understanding of national and local research on higher education issues to inform team’s work and incorporate best practices in analysis and research
- Writes reports and makes presentations involving critical data
- Supports and contributes to center evaluations
Other Responsibilities
- Performs other related duties as assigned related to the mission of the Belk Center
Minimum Education and Experience
- Doctorate in an education, policy, or related field from an accredited doctoral-granting university.
- 5+ years of research experience in education or a related field.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong writing skills, with ability to convey accurate, persuasive messages to a general audience as well as targeted stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience with research and analysis, including the ability to synthesize data and draw informed, accurate conclusions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment, with ability to prioritize among competing goals, and to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email skills.
- Strong communication skills are essential along with strong organizational skills and the capacity to innovate.
- Demonstrated planning expertise and ability to set clear priorities, delegate, and guide the investment of human and other resources to help achieve goals.
- Comfort presenting to groups, facilitating collaborative work, operating across lines of difference, and developing relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Familiarity with the field of higher education and community colleges more specifically.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading research teams.
- Substantial research and publication record.
- Ability to build relationships with stakeholders including colleges, state and local education agencies, federal funding agencies, and foundations.
- Experience working with large administrative data sets to measure outcomes.
- Experience with advanced quantitative research methods and statistics (e.g., SAS, Stata, R); familiarity with qualitative methods.
