NC State CVM prepares the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary scientists, conducts bench and clinical research to solve animal and human health problems, addresses critical ecosystem and public health issues, helps protect the U.S. food supply, and promotes a clearer understanding and appreciation of the ramifications related to the growing human-animal bond that is at the center of these concerns.

The CVM Academic Affairs Office supports departments (MBS, DOCS, PHP) in developing and delivering the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Curriculum. We employ best practices in education to support our learners and the veterinary profession. We support our educators (faculty and staff) with community-building, learning opportunities, and resources to ensure that they are able to fulfill their own and their students’ goals. We are attentive to student needs and experiences, working with the Student Services Office to provide personal and professional support.

Essential Job Duties

This position provides laboratory and teaching assistance for a variety of courses taught to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students. This position requires knowledge of the biology, anatomy, husbandry, and physiology of a variety of domesticated animals, including dogs, cats, ruminants, and equids. The position responsibilities will support the Clinical Skills (ClinSkills) courses, including live, cadaveric, and simulated animal work.

The general scope of duties includes but is not limited to: 
  • Organizing, assisting in the teaching, and expediting the laboratory portions of the Simulation Laboratory (SimLab) and selected Department of Clinical Sciences (DOCS) courses for veterinary students
  • Maintaining the ClinSkills teaching laboratory facility (spay/neuter ward space and supply room, B104, Storage Cage)
  • Supporting development and data collection of research projects
  • Contributing to course assessments, including set up and grading; management of and data entry for Learning Management Software sites for courses (eg Moodle); design, preparation, and repair of teaching models and other resources
  • Coordinating and supporting pre-/peri-/post-operative care of live animal patients including anesthetic maintenance during surgery
  • Supervising student workers and assisting in ordering supplies and maintaining inventory for ClinSkills and SimLab dependent courses

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of animal biology, basic anatomy.
  • An understanding of all regulatory standards that apply to a laboratory in which live animals and cadaveric specimens are used.
  • Google suite products, and MS Word and Excel for communication and data collection.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • A valid NC driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment.
