Executive Director

The Texas Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors is seeking qualified candidates for the position of executive director based in Austin, Texas. This position requires strong communication and organizational skills, knowledge of higher education and/or the Texas legislative process, the ability to support a wide range of member interests, and a willingness to succeed as the sole employee of the Council.

Duties and Responsibilities
The executive director is the chief administrative officer of the Council, appointed by and responsible to the members of the Council. The executive director promotes and furthers the Council’s mission and is responsible for implementing Council policies, initiatives, plans and directives. The person appointed will ideally be well acquainted with public higher education institutions, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the workings of the Texas legislature.

The executive director is responsible for the financial stewardship of the Council, managing the budget and operations, and day-to-day decisions. The executive director exercises a significant role in the planning and coordination of the Council’s programs in line with Council’s initiatives and priorities. Currently these include communicating with members on recent news, meetings, and trends in higher education and supporting initiatives which promote the value of Texas public higher education.

The executive director provides staff service to the Council’s chairman, executive committee, and overall Council membership. The executive director is expected to collaborate and coordinate effective relationships with other higher education organizations, education leaders, and state officials.

The executive director will be accountable to and will report directly to the Council. The Council will evaluate the performance of the executive director on an annual basis using the position description as a basis for evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications
Required: Bachelor’s degree.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated self-starter with organizational, interpersonal, leadership, and management skills.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills with the ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports, and correspondence with accuracy.
  • Good computer skills (Word, Outlook, Excel, Quicken, etc.)
  • Must have project management experience with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Event planning and/or nonprofit management experience is a plus.
  • Experience in governmental relations such as working with the Texas legislature is a plus.

Additional Position Details
The expected salary range is $110,000 - $135,00/year, commensurate with educational background and work experience.

This regular full-time position that is an exempt position and is not eligible for overtime pay.
