Pay Rate:

Salary (Exempt) 90k - 110k annually

Essential Functions

Opportunities exist to seek/receive grant funds from government agencies, private foundations, and corporations through a competitive proposal process. Opportunities also exist to seek/receive awards from local employee contribution clubs and community groups. The function of this position is to maximize these opportunities for the San Diego Regional Office of the Southern California Divisional Headquarters and its programs through proposal preparation, grant expenditure reporting and appropriate follow-up and relationship cultivation.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Funding Research By:
    • Using various online databases and links, identify potential funding sources for Salvation Army programs in San Diego County.
    • Review the potential funding sources' web sites and all printed application guidelines to determine if the foundation, government agency or corporation is a good match for existing programs.
    • Make recommendations regarding whether various programs should apply to each prospective funder and record all relevant information about these potential funding sources on a quarterly work plan, which the proposal writer will create and maintain.
    • Work with the Strategy team to identify and conduct prospect research on individuals, foundations, and corporations for potential grant requests of support.
    • Maintains master calendar for all grant activity.
    • Cultivate outreach efforts to S.D. Foundations and Corporations with their community affairs representatives.
    • Meet activity benchmarks as set out by San Diego Senior Director of Development.
    • Ensure overall quality and accuracy of all grant documents leaving the unit. Prepare grant expenditure reports and related documents and be responsible for the preparation and submission to the foundations.
  • Proposal Preparation:
    • Organize proposals, pay attention to detail and specifications, and use concise, persuasive writing to request reasonable funding.
    • Demonstrate ability to clearly understand grant makers' guidelines before writing the proposal to ensure that grant maker goals match grant-seeking purposes.
    • Prepare proposals that deliver a) an answer to the community need, or b) a solution to a community problem.
    • Prepare documents for submission, proof-read; submit to the funding source and follow-up appropriately.
    • Prepare proposals and "letters of intent."
    • Adapt boilerplate proposals and Letters of Intent/Inquiry to the unique specifications of the potential
    • Assist in the devising evaluation procedures and systems, as appropriate. Maintain updated records on donors in database - tracks, contact information and notes.
  • Budgeting:
    • Work with Corps Officers, Program Directors, and other Salvation Army staff to develop project budgets.
  • Grants Management:
    • Coordinate the completion and submission of required reports to foundations and other funding sources.
    • Work with program managers to ensure grant objectives and spending are on track.
    • Call and thank donors within 48 hours.
  • Represent The Salvation Army at public meetings with organizations, foundations, corporate representatives, and other community members, as requested.
  • Attend and participate in staff and committee meetings as requested.
  • Assist in identifying media and public relations opportunities that highlight foundation partnerships and support and how Salvation Army programs benefit the communities served.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 30lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as file cabinet drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  1. Bachelor's Degree
  2. Creative, strategic thinker with experience in proposal writing and familiarity with program development.
  3. Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. 5+ years combined experience in the for-and non-profit sectors.
  5. Demonstrated ability to convey complex and complicated ideas in a clear, concise way.
  6. Ability to analyze, evaluate, and grasp high level concepts.
  7. Public relations capability.
  8. Attention to detail.
  9. Ability to meet deadlines while managing competing priorities.
  10. Ability to work in a team environment yet be self-directed.
  11. Proficiency in MS-DOS, MS Windows, MS Office applications (Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, Publisher and PowerPoint).
  12. Must have a valid California Driver's License.
  13. Before hire submit a copy of DMV Driving Record with less than two (2) violations (moving or accident) in last twelve months or a DUI within the last 18 months, to be eligible for this position.

  15. Before hire must pass three (3) hour Fleet Safety Test of The Salvation Army. Must score a passing grade to be hired for this position.
  16. ion Army Fleet Safety Program on an annual basis.
  17. May not obtain more than two (2) violations (moving or accidents) in one year. Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that persons no longer meeting the qualifications of this position, if more than two (2) violations in a 12-month period accrue to their DMV Driving Record, will be required to go to Traffic School at own expense or could be terminated.

EVALUATION PROCESS

Employees will be partially evaluated in the following categories: accuracy, alertness, creativity, friendliness, personality, personal appearance, physical fitness, attendance, housekeeping (orderliness and cleanliness), dependability, drive, job knowledge, quantity of work, stability, and courtesy. A copy of the evaluation is available to each new employee during the Personnel Orientation Session. The evaluation is processed following the probationary period, job change and then annually on each employee.
