POSITION TITLE: Biosafety Associate Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Biosafety Associate Director supporting the EH&S Department at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, home to some of the world's most renowned scientists. This is a great opportunity for someone who is excited to share great science with the community by providing technical compliance expertise governing the conduct of biomedical research. This role will direct and oversee a comprehensive, institute-wide Biosafety program designed to proactively minimize risk related to non-compliance with policies and regulations. This position implements guidelines established by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at Scripps Research, and regulatory agencies of the State and Federal governments. Additionally, will coordinate biosafety monitoring, compliance, and biosafety response activities of all Scripps Research facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Responsible for managing a comprehensive, institute-wide Biosafety program including high containment, Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Institutional Review Entity (IRE) that proactively minimizes risk related to non-compliance with policies and regulations
  • Continuously improves comprehensive biosafety policies, procedures, protocols, and reviews as part of the Institute's overall Environmental Health & Safety Program
  • Serves as technical expert regarding equipment, facilities, and work practices for protecting laboratories, staff, and the environment from contamination and infectious organisms.
  • Identifies, develops, and delivers training programs for Scripps Research employees and collaborators working with biological agents and other related materials, such as addressing biosafety and laboratory safety requirements set by the NIH, CDC, DOT, IATA, USDA Cal/OSHA, and the San Diego County CUPA, etc.
  • Serves as a key member on internal committees such as the IBC, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Occupational Safety Committee (OSC), and Institute emergency response team. Liaises with regulatory agencies and professional counterparts in other institutions.
  • Oversees the supervision and professional development of personnel through training and mentorship, with a focus on both technical best practices and interpersonal skill development.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in microbiology, virology or related biological science or discipline, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in a principal biosafety position (e.g., BSO) including BSL2 and BSL3 environments.
  • Proven track record in managing effective biosafety, biocontainment, & biosecurity program(s).
  • Experience building and managing highly collaborative and effective teams, as well as spearheading and shepherding organizational and / or process transformation.
  • Commitment to building a culture of collaboration, performance, transparency and integrity.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities while effectively managing multiple commitments, at times on tight deadlines.
  • Strategic mindset coupled with the ability and willingness to roll up sleeves where necessary and desire to constantly improve the status quo.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with proven experience in cultivating cross-collaborative working relationships across an organization with an ability to influence at all levels.
  • Related experience in an academic or scientific non-profit institutional setting preferred.
  • Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) preferred.
  • This is a full-time onsite role. Accessibility to travel to campus is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $129,600 annually to $151,800 annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
