Your Role

The Data and Analytics (D&A) organization focuses enterprise-wide to partner with business stakeholders to apply the power of data & analytics to deliver new insights and data-driven solutions to accelerate business outcomes. The Data Services & Solutions team is part of the centralized D&A organization and oversees the design and implementation of data solutions and data products. The Data Modeler, Principal will report to the Sr. Manager, Data Solutions and Services. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Data Vault 2.0 and Dimensional models within the D&A organization. You will be providing strategic direction, mentoring junior team members, and leading and enforcing data modeling standards and best practices. Your Work

In this role, you will:

  • Plan and engineer the evolution of the data modeling services in line with business goals, business requirements, and technology integration
  • Plan and engineer the implementation of new data patterns
  • Be a thought leader for data modeling especially in the area of partnering with other functional teams
  • Build and maintain cross-functional relationships with business partners in both IT and business
  • Lead evaluation of future technologies and make recommendations for reengineering data modeling process and procedures to take advantage of new technologies and techniques
  • Identify and articulate gaps in current models features necessary to properly support the many use cases for Cloud migrations. Collaborate with architects, Solution design leads, product owners and developers to design features that close those gaps
  • Lead data model review sessions. Develop, adopt and mature the data modeling standards and guidelines aligning to industry best practices
  • Create, validate, and update the data dictionary by coordinating with data governance team and business users. Capture business rules for logical to physical mapping in the models. Work closely with the data governance team to define data classification, PHI/sensitive information, and enterprise reference data in Collibra and modeling tool
  • Participate in project specific architectural working groups to provide expertise in modeling. Provide inputs on the data management of data assets in the organization
  • Create fully attributed and documented conceptual, logical and physical models
  • Lead the design of conceptual, logical, and physical data models, leveraging best practices, including the use of dimensional and data vault 2.0 modeling techniques
  • Collaborate with data Engineers to ensure data pipelines and integration efforts are optimized and adapt to evolving best practices
  • Generate physical model DDL and SQL for views for implementation by the data engineers

Your Knowledge and Experience

  • Requires a college degree or equivalent experience and minimum 10 years of prior relevant experience
  • Requires mastery level knowledge of data modeling principles and best practices including a good understanding of ER/Objects/Dimensional/DataVault 2.0/canonical and semantic data modeling concepts
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in the data space spanning data modeling, SQL-based database management systems, integration, ETL / data pipeline design, and data management
  • Expertise in data modeling tools and techniques such as Erwin, ERD and ERStudio
  • Prior experience using data warehouse MPP platforms such as Snowflake, Netezza, Teradata, Redshift, etc.
  • Experience with data analysis, data profiling and metadata management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to gather requirements and effectively communicate technical, functional concepts and ideas to all levels of employees and management
  • Experience and desire to work within a fast-paced environment with short release cycles and an iterative development methodology
  • Experience and exposure with HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) profiles and resources in order to map enterprise data or source data to appropriate FHIR resources is desired
  • Expert-level data modeling experience in an analytics/warehouse environment, using dimensional modeling techniques or data vault 2.0 methodology is desired
  • Requires expert-level SQL coding experience

Pay Range:

The pay range for this role is: $146,000.00 to $218,900.00 for California.

Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.
