Position Summary

Poseida is seeking an outstanding candidate to join our Legal team. The Senior Patent Counsel will work with the General Counsel, other in-house IP and Legal professionals, outside IP Counsel and R&D Team to support the patent function for Poseida Therapeutics' pre-clinical, clinical and approved cell and gene therapy products and technologies.


Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide intellectual property (IP) support for a variety of Research and Development projects, including preparing and prosecuting patent applications, prepare and review Office Action Responses, monitor internal and third party research and development activities and other related support.
  • Identify potential patent opportunities, prepare and file patent applications and prosecute them worldwide, analyze patents and conduct freedom-to-operate searches.
  • Drafts and review confidentiality agreements, material transfer and related agreements.
  • Review relevant IP provisions of collaboration and business development agreements to ensure protection of the Company's IP assets.
  • Conduct clearance and diligence on emerging technologies, new products, collaborations and strategic transactions.
  • In partnership with Research and Development, manage the relevant patent portfolio to recommend retention, abandonments or portfolio cutbacks.
  • Participate and lead Patent Committee meetings on at least a quarterly basis.
  • Attend (either in person or by videoconference) and actively participate in relevant R&D meetings as necessary to ensure the Company's intellectual property developments are being fully protected.
  • Provide legal support for IP aspects of relevant business/transactional matters, including conducting IP due diligence in support of potential licensing or acquisition opportunities.
  • Ensure consistently high quality and timeliness of IP advice and support, including docket management.
  • Work with the General Counsel, other in-house IP and Legal professionals and Finance on quarterly and annual IP budget discussions, planning and budget management.
  • Manage in-house patent database and daily patent correspondence
  • Manage docket costs, travel and use of outside counsel with the goal of ensuring that IP support is provided in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Monitor patent families that are out-licensed, track and manage upcoming deadline, drafts, and responses to ensure timely and consistent responses world wide.


Requirements

Requirements, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • J.D. degree or LL.M. degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction and twelve (12) years of experience practicing intellectual property law. An advanced degree preferred such as a master's degree or Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, or structural biology.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Experience in all aspects of U.S. and foreign intellectual property law relating to biotechnology at a law firm or biotechnology/pharmaceutical corporation.
  • Excellent analytic, legal drafting and oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong management and leadership skills as well as a strong client service focus and the ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to work efficiently, to prioritize workflow, to meet demanding deadlines, and to manage multi-dimensional projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in U.S. and/or foreign adversarial proceedings (such as patent litigation, Inter Partes and Ex Parte Reviews, Post Grant Reviews, or Oppositions)


Senior Patent Counsel Pay Rate: $211,000 to $250,000

The final pay offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type, and length of experience with the industry, education, geographic location, etc.
