The faculty coordinator for First Year Seminar is responsible for the coordination, planning, scheduling, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning associated with FYS 1010. The faculty member is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on the campus(es) or center to which the faculty member is assigned. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and collaborating with internal stakeholders to support student success. A faculty member performs all other duties as directed by the Dean, Vice President of the Division of Learning, or the President or designee.

The faculty member will teach 12 FYS credits annually, and will schedule, publish, and hold office hours during each academic semester. The faculty member will participate in professional development opportunities and perform professional service hours based on faculty placement in rank, as set forth in the Faculty Handbook.

The faculty member is responsible to the Dean of Learning Resources, and the Vice President of the Division of Learning.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Must be able to perform the following essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

Curricular Responsibilities:


  • Coordinate outcomes assessment processes, representing any updates and changes to CIC.
  • Monitor implementation of the curriculum. Stay abreast of current trends and changes in education at CSM and adapt curriculum accordingly.
  • Coordinate with transfer services, advising, financial aid, Learning Support Services, and other departments to ensure that information in the course is relevant and pertinent to CSM students.
  • Maintain responsibility for understanding standards and adapt curriculum appropriately.
  • Ensure that all modalities including online and hybrid meet standards and credit hour equivalencies.
  • Review and update all FYS syllabi, curricular, and text material on a regular schedule.
  • Review and update all FYS LMS shells and instructor communities on a regular schedule.

Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Interview, recommend to hire, develop, and evaluate adjunct FYS faculty.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with the Division of Learning Resources, Dean, and other college stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and conduct faculty meetings, including pre-semester meetings.
  • Participate with Gateway Course Community of Practice, College Readiness Committee, and Early College core team.
  • Advise students as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with administrative support for faculty support, supply and equipment needs, and schedule planning.
  • Complete and submit required internal and external reporting documents.
  • Work with the Dean for planning, determining goals, and submitting data/documents for planning.
  • Schedule and staff all FYS course sections.

Faculty Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct courses at various times, including day, evening, and weekends.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and inspire enthusiasm among students.
  • Ensure each class includes essential curricular components, relevant content, and effective pedagogy.
  • Keep students informed about course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.
  • Provide prompt grading and maintain accurate scholastic records, including attendance.
  • Submit academic reports and documentation as required.
  • Conduct class evaluations and participate in college evaluations.
  • Ensure classes are held as scheduled.
  • Utilize college online resources for communication and course management.
  • Plan each lesson with consideration for content and teaching methods.
  • Adapt teaching to accommodate various learning styles and incorporate instructional technologies when appropriate.
  • Maximize learning opportunities for each student.
  • Stay updated on current trends and teaching approaches through professional development.
  • Strive for qualities outlined in faculty evaluation criteria.
  • Submit required reports in a timely manner.
  • Attend college meetings and activities. Serve on college committees as needed.
  • Document project experiences and best practices and share them widely.

Other duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Education and Training

Degree(s) required: Master's degree or comparable graduate degree with at least 18 graduate level credits in one of the disciplines taught at the college.
Degree(s) preferred: PhD in related field
Experience required: At least five years Teaching experience, with at least three at a community college.
