Job Description Summary

 

Serve as a primary advisor for new students and a secondary advisor to returning students during periods of faculty absence. Advise academically at-risk students and communicate with students who have been administratively withdrawn about their future academic goals. Other duties include participating in advising and registration events, career planning and placement, classroom visits, and assisting students who are transferring to a four-year school after graduation. This role works closely with faculty, Admissions, Academic Resource Center, Financial Aid, and the Registrar offices. This position serves as advisor to the Weirton campus Student Government Association

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to

 

  • Serve as a primary advisor for new students, including: initial intake/orientation (onboarding) of students to WVNCC academic and institutional policies and procedures; educating students about curricular options and success strategies; developing appropriate advisory relationships with assigned students; providing referrals appropriately to internal and external services and resources; responding to vast array and high volume of questions via phone, email, walk-in, and scheduled appointments that requires knowledge of different resources and procedures; using Banner, the ASC login system and other college software programs to track and document advising sessions, communications, and student progress; transitioning students to faculty advisors; advising returning students during periods of extended faculty absence (summer, holidays etc.); initiating and building relationships with faculty/academic departments; identifying appropriate contacts within academic departments/programs; maintaining working knowledge of program curriculums, websites, policies; encouraging dialogue about student advising issues, policies, procedures, and promoting collaboration between staff and faculty advisors; sitting on committees and attending faculty meetings as needed.
  • Develop relationships and communicate regularly with students. Create personalized education plans for students. Assist with explanation and information of the 2+2 programs and transfer options while communicating with the partner schools and future and current students. Assist with the Job Fairs on campus. Assist with resume writing, interview techniques, and classroom visits to discuss career readiness and preparedness. Work with Career Coach to help students search for employment. Refer students to mental wellness and health resources and promote student engagement activities. Communicate with students and the Success Coaches regularly as students are administratively withdrawn from classes to develop a new plan toward graduation. Work with the faculty meta-advisors to answer the advising inbox email questions. Address inquiries from students, parents, alumni, and community members and serve as the primary campus liaison for admissions and financial aid.
  • Represent the institution in the public and in schools for advising purposes, such as fairs, open houses, and community programs. Assist with recruiting events such as high school visits and meetings with community partners and organizations. Connect with potential and current early entrance students in the high schools and on campus. Participate in the design and implementation of advising activities. Give input to marketing, admissions, campus operations, and others in regard to marketing, promotion, and distribution of materials and information while working closely with others. Explain the college’s student handbook and other student academic policies. Provide assistance with questions regarding procedures and student issues; serve as the “go to” resource for Weirton Campus students; assist Weirton Campus full-time and adjunct faculty with students, student activities, honors convocation, the leadership luncheon and other campus activities. Serve as advisor to the Weirton Student Government Association and Campus Activities Board; assist with student activities, campus student leadership and campus events; assist with student government community service project for the campus; attend campus events; attend trainings, including off site as required.

  • Serve on campus-wide committees such as retention, mental health, and strategic enrollment management. To provide service for traditional and non-traditional students through a flexible work schedule and serve as liaison to other offices and resources across the college. Participate in Welcome events, Graduation Fairs, Days of Thunder, Weekends of Thunder and Nights of Thunder registration events, and graduation. Participate in classroom registration visits with faculty to assist with advising and registration during each semester. Assist the Director of Action Center with retention and success initiatives including: registration campaigns/interventions; contribute to the institutional vision and mission for the academic advising program; assist with the assessment and evaluation of all advising programs and services; use Banner, ARGOS, BrightSpace, Kronos, MSOffice Suite, and all other WVNCC software/computer applications proficiently.
