Job Description

 

Portland Community College seeks three full-time instructors who will start in September 2024. We are looking for a colleague who will demonstrate discipline expertise and show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students. We welcome applications from instructors who share a commitment to racial justice and intersectionality and are informed by anti-racist teaching practices, and applicants who work to close equity gaps by recognizing, understanding, and respecting the perspectives of all students. The successful candidates will be qualified to teach a variety of introductory psychology courses.

Candidate Profile

These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.
Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.

  • Provides evidence of teaching at the college level, facilitating professional development/continuing education training, teaching psychoeducational courses for adult learners, and/or other experiences working with adult learners.
  • Demonstrates understanding of 100- and 200-level psychology theory and content as specified in our Course Content Outcome Guides for PCC Psychology Courses
  • Demonstrates commitment to current and evidence-based scientific content, theories, ideas, and a commitment to teaching psychology courses with an emphasis on that scientific approach.
  • Applies instructional expertise and uses Culturally Responsive Teaching/Education to make topics in psychology accessible to students with varying levels of knowledge in the subject and from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation students and students from historically marginalized communities such as students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, and students with lower SES backgrounds.
  • Provides evidence of commitment to remaining current in scholarship and understanding intersectionality with responsiveness to cultural shifts through ongoing self-reflective examination of teaching practice, assessments, and a willingness to innovate and adapt teaching practices.
  • Provides evidence of commitment to collaborative service - based on mutual respect, equity, and open communication - to students, the department, and the college through work on committees, projects, curriculum development, and program development.


Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

Master’s degree or higher in Psychology (including all specialized degrees with Psychology in the title of the degree)

OR Master’s degree or higher in Counseling (including specialties in MFT, MFCC, CMF)

OR Master’s degree or higher in a Related Area and completion of 30 quarter-hours of graduate credit in a Psychology or Counseling Department.

Related Area degrees include, but are not limited to:

Cognitive Science
Human Sciences
Neuroscience
Social or Human Ecology
Social Work
Human Development

The list of Related Areas may not be inclusive as there are other degree titles that may be appropriate. The Division Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair (and/or screening committee), will make a recommendation to the Dean of Instruction about the applicability of a particular degree that is outside the scope of these lists.

 

 

Starting Salary Expectations
Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($64,562) and Step 3 ($68,491) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

  • Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Please note that Portland Community College is not currently able to provide visa (e.g. H1-B Visa) sponsorship for potential employees.

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
